This song started out after listening to a lot of The National's High Violet album. I wanted to try to write something that had a bit of a jangly chorus but felt really moody in the verse. I used some more electronic drums to kind of give it a more ambient vibe, kind of pushing the limits of standard rock.

This is more of a straight up rock track, I wanted to write something for my work as ESSIE, but it's never made it to a release. It's hook driven and upbeat, with a message all about renewal and turning the dirt of our lives into something beautiful in time.

Pearls

This song is a walk through humility. It centres around what it is like to realise you've said to much, and that you know very little, and therefore you must just sit back, listen, and be liberated.

Steady As Breathing

This is another super stripped back bedroom demo. I've always been really inspired by artists such as Bon Iver and Imogen Heap, so the whole layered vocals in the dark has been something my mind has been drawn back to again and again, but will never get played live as ESSIE. This are just the night time nuggets of ideas that swirl around and beg to be demo'd haha!

Be Good

When I moved to London I got to stay in this amazing house that friends of mine were living in, with this big ol' piano. I had no job so I just recorded some ideas and then chopped them into a demo later on, it's ended up being pretty moody.

I recorded this song in Nashville, in RCA Studio A with a bunch of super talented session guys. It's sat on my hard drive for far too long, and I'm still figuring out what to do with it. I wrote it the day before the session, so I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Love Is Better

This is another one that I just bashed out on acoustic and then did a few different edits of. It's bluesy and gritty, and maybe it'll be re-worked into an ESSIE song one day.

All I Wanna Do new mix

This was the song that became Not Easy, a single I released as ESSIE in 2016. I got challenged to be less cerebral in my songwriting approach, to write something 'dumb', and this is what happened. I wrote it with my good friend Ben Pohlmann, who collaborated on a lot of ESSIE tracks. I wrote all the lyrics, and ended up singing lead vocals on the final track, but it's quite cool to hear this version with Ben singing. I wanted a real Jack White-esque vocal line and guitar grit. I later took my favourite ideas and turned it into Not Easy, but I thought it would be cool for anyone who is interested to hear the song before the song.

Long Gone

This song never made it to an ESSIE release, but may do at some point in some form. It's a growling bluesy song that follows the story of people in those hours between 3am and 7am, when the people left out and about are a strange and fascinating mix of drunk-partygoers and other strange and terrifying characters.

Forgotten Hours

Essie Laugharne is a 24 year old songwriter hailing from Perth, Western Australia. Essie relocated to London in 2015, following her graduation of the Bachelor of Popular Music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Having began songwriting at a young age, being finalist in songwriting competitions such as the West Australian Music Industry (WAMI) song of the year competition, it was at university that she really began to hone her skills as a songwriter. Performing and releasing regularly as the artist ESSIE, Essie Laugharne boasts a large back catalog of contemporary songs, many of which have been unused in her ESSIE projects. Essie took part in the Taxi Road Music Rally conference in LA in 2014, gathering advice and feedback from industry experts in film, television and advertising publishing and licensing sectors. Essie writes in a variety of contemporary styles, from stadium rock and blues rock, to indie, pop and folk. Essie’s music can be found on her songwriting Soundcloud channel, which features demos of many of her songwriting ideas. Her official ESSIE Soundcloud and website also feature those songs she has written and released as an artist. Essie is always looking to write to briefs, as well as collaborate and write for other artists. Her passion for music and songwriting continues to spur her on to the next idea, continually trying to push the boundaries of her own creativity, to conceive a truly memorable song.
