Each year, we ask a few artists from the Dekmantel Selectors line-up to deliver a mix in anticipation of the new edition. Who could be a better fit than DJ Python to re-initiate this tradition?

Even before Dulce Compañia, which introduced the Python alias to the world, Brian Piñeyro has been providing a wide array of unique sounds to those who care to listen. To be fair, he makes it hard not to care, and also to describe his ambling, dembow-inspired rhythms as something other than ‘deep reggaeton’. But if Piñeyro has taught us one thing, it is that music is just moods flowing into one another. Sometimes, the mood is a percussive therapy session, and sometimes it warps drone-driven electronica, tingly synths, and steely dancehall.

It is unsurprising that this mix is all about the mood too. A 60-minute journey across genuinely emotive songs and honeyed hymns. In his words, it’s just about “enjoying the time with people around you, whatever shape the people or the time may take”. When listening to this mix, keep in mind DJ Python’s approach to making soup: you can only really do it well if you allow yourself to move beyond the recipe. The only thing left to do is let go and get locked in.

Stockholm Syndrome are a DJ/producer duo based in Melbourne made up of the Scot Iain Mac aka Pyz and Australian Brett Wilson aka Wil-tron.  After DJing together at the same party and recognising their similar tastes they formed Stockholm Syndrome in late 2013.

Hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland, Pyz has been DJing and promoting for over a decade.  With residencies at Split, Access and We… Electric he's supported DJ Hell, The Hacker, Ivan Smagghe, Popof, Surgeon, Agoria, Luke Slater, Derek May and Kevin Saunderson to name a few.  After moving to Melbourne he formed Stray in 2012 and has been heavily involved in Yaldi Boomtime as resident and co-promoter.

Wil-tron discovered electronic music after dropping out of a Fine Art degree and a friend introduced him to artists such as Dopplereffekt, Aux 88 and Anthony Rother.  He started producing his own tracks and after 6 months he made his debut performing live at Melbourne institution Meccanoid.  Since then he went on to perform a variety of nights supporting the likes of Legowelt, Bangkok Impact, DJ TLR and Modeselektor.

Stockholm Syndrome’s style varies widely and can’t be neatly wrapped up into a single genre. They’re drawn to dark, moody, sub 120bpm techno, the energetic, raw and powerful Mex-tech, the slow and the Balaeric, Drug Chug and the strange. In the 2 years since they formed, Stockholm Syndrome have clocked up an impressive gig list DJing at many of Melbourne’s iconic venues such as Revolver Upstairs, New Guernica, The Liberty Social, Section 8, Boney and Loop Bar.

2015 saw the boys play an inspired closing set at the inaugural Piknic Electronik Melbourne, a twisted, genre bending set at Unfold/001 and their first 2 original productions have been well received by other artists such as Gemini Brothers, id!r and Death by Repetition.  2016 has started off with a bang when they opened the Sunset Stage at Rainbow Serpent Festival, widely regarded as one of the best music, art and lifestyle festivals in the world.

Stockholm Syndrome continue to be kept very busy with gigs, working on new productions, the launch of their new website while also getting set to host their own series of parties "Cognitive Dissidence" with the first being in February at Section 8.

The idea of traveling when no one else does appeals to you. The peaceful journey allows you to focus on some music you've never seemed to find the time to absorb.

Reaching the outskirts of London now, and some African rhythms are slowly blending with an ethereal voice. By the time you are in East London the tempo drops again; the soft and crisp morning light covers the empty streets of Stoke Newington.

As you are parking your car and the field recording of the airplane departing finishes, you think of breakfast.

I return to keep my (just born last year) tradition of compiling a slowcore classics’ and hidden gems’ mixtape, first premiered via Palanga Street Radio. Slowcore compilations are found rather rarely and this one brings you the very best, offered by the scene during its more than 30 years’ existence. If you have experienced waking up at a deserted small town drive-in, feeling lonely like never before or have been stuck in a heavy snowfall inflicted traffic jam in the middle of nowhere, you are sure to feel these 50 minutes of sound.

The series is curated to set an ongoing soundtrack for any given day, allowing for coincidental interactions as well as exchange from one artist to the next. 

Esters is a cafe in Stoke Newington serving the finest in breakfast, coffee and baked goods to a neighbourhood clientele. We view this series as an extension of our ethos and an experiment in the cooperation of flavour, sound and experience.
