Estherb nonplace

Following my research on how we experience sound while traveling, I composed a new piece based on my field recordings. The piece is divided into two segments that present Chinese culture from two unique perspectives. The first segment was recorded in a restaurant located in New York City's China Town. This restaurant was chosen because of its unusual soundscape, which was in part a product of the ventilation system. The second segment was composed of sounds from a trip in China in 2006. This audio composition depicts the traditional culture and the effect of globalization on Chinese culture.

I am an art critic, radio journalism, independant curator and musician. I play turntable, handles vinyl records, and records soundscapes. I have performed in Canada, the US and France ; additionally, my works have been presented in England, Germany, Palestine, Portugal and Danemark. Improvisation allows me to create raw, non-linear music peppered with altered sonic quotes and abstracted sounds, textures mostly produced by vinyls that have undergone specific alterations (grinding, cutting, etc.). I am a member of the turntable trio Vinyl Interventions with Carrie Gates (Saskatoon) and Marinko Jareb (St. Catherines, Ontario). This outfit has been presenting its eponymous workshop since 2002. I also organize concert series devoted to improvised music for acoustic instruments. a_dontigny, Gordon Allen, Olivier Borzeix, Isaiah Ceccarelli, Adam Kinner, Léon Lo, Philippe Lauzier, Erin Sexton, Martin Tétreault and David Turgeon are some of the musicians I like working with. In 2009 I got my first composition commission from L'Ensemble Supermusique of Montreal. I am a member of CKUT radio, Montreal and had been an active member of RADIA.
These days I do radio art pieces based on field recordings.
