You couldn't see anything in front of you; the darkness shrouded the trees and any living organisms inhabiting them. By day these woods felt magical but at night it felt as though something sinister were afoot – as though there were unidentified creatures waiting to pounce in the shadows. These speculations would remain as such for those who'd been foolish enough to enter had never returned to tell the tale.

Bristol-based composer and audio-visual artist Surgeons Girl caught our attention with her EP for Livity Sound last winter. Now she follows that up with an outing for London's Inside Out Records titled 'The Empress Moss': four tracks that showcase her knack for creating enchanting sonics. Coming from a classical music background, she marries this approach with her passion for analogue hardware and love of ambient and techno sounds, inviting Ombra International boss Curses to take on the remix.

Also the Valencian Fledermaus project with Isse at the bass, this guys are in charge of the booking for the mythical Freedonia room in Barcelona. David J Bull is a Cardiff based DJ and producer. He has been a key player in the Welsh underground scene for the last 10 years co-running the TEAK and Studio 89 parties which have gained a cult following over the years. As a DJ, David has honed his sets around his obsession with rough and ready 80s electronic music mixed with contemporary sounds that also tap into this nostalgia - in particular the sounds of industrial, new wave, synth pop and new beat. For his debut EP 'Body & Beat', David nods in particular towards the New Beat sounds that emerged and vanished between '88-'90. Tapping into the brash production style and old school cut and paste sampling, this EP takes inspiration from artists like Fatal Error and Shakti. David pulls together a collage of sound sources and mixes it in with FM synths, bass guitar and Cheetah drum samples (a budget drum machine made in Cardiff back in the 80s) - the result is a dark and somewhat wacky electronic record ready for an alternative dancefloor.

With a string of well-received works released on some of the most important Indie Dance/Dark Disco imprints out there, such as NEIN, Roam, Beachcoma, Voltaire Music, Nothing Is Real, Beat Is Murder, and Encants, just to name a few, established and talented Italian producer Low Manuel is now back on the Spanish platform and party series Side Up Works with the interesting “Baffo”. Featuring two stark originals and two colourful remixes made with love by Darlyn Vlys and Diego Montiel (SXDNS194), the label boss himself, the EP is definitely a must-have for the fans of high-quality dark grooves out there.

The solid title track, premiered here, brings some characteristic elements of Manuel’s signature sonority: A fat and bouncing bassline, heavy and dirty synth layers, and a Rock-ish bearing. A track 100% devoted to taking its listeners & dancers into the plural and entangled universe of influences of the virtuoso artist.

The label's second release is a mini-album by a talented musician and DJ from Odesa (Ukraine) – Itwo5. The album consists of 3 original tracks, and in addition to them 4 rather contrasting remixes from our great and very famous friends: Frolov (Ukraine), Colossio (Mexico), ID_UA (Ukraine) and Leonor (Mexico).

Wilds EP is a story about exploring new places and getting new experiences. About how difficult it may seem to become a part of another world that suddenly opens up for you and is ready to share the most intimate. This is my rhythm, this is how I got into slow music. This is a jungle with its own rules and "tribes" that do not like strangers. As a result, this place and people share all their knowledge with you, show their different sides and invite you to become a part of it.


In the Wilds track (thickets, wild places) - we get acquainted with the area, with the evening flora and fauna, we have the feeling that we are being watched. Halt, through a dream, somewhere in the distance, strange songs are heard that pull deep into these places to see what is happening there. Morning comes, and all the way to these sounds seemed to be a dream. In the morning, without leaving the thought that the dream was too obvious, we set off along a clearly trodden road, even the tracks are similar.

The further the road goes inland, the more clearly voices and instruments, laughter and loud conversations become audible - on this day there were big celebrations on the occasion of the summer - Solstice.
We are noticed, and without further ado with smiles are invited to the epicenter of events. The celebrations are bright, some people are in the river running nearby, there is a lot of fire, eccentric masks, rituals and worship of the Sun, which is about to go beyond the horizon.

With the sound of the first horn, attention shifts to the moon - Lunar, a big fire lights up, the dances become more intense, sometimes even creepy. Everything, like one big gear, circles around the fire, there are fewer songs, all this continues until late at night. In the morning we wake up from the noise of children, the fire is still smoldering in the center. The realization comes that you are not a stranger here, and you have always been a part of this.

The lighthouse stood proudly in the middle of the desert, its bright beacon scanning the dunes like an all-seeing eye. As the warning lights reflected across the sand, each grain sparkled under its beam before melting away to reveal huge chasms of water. Was this a mirage or just a figment of their imagination?

Following the textural electronica of Da Iguana in December, Russian collective, event series and label Serenades are stepping into 2021 with their first split EP, which brings together Malka Tuti alumni LINJA and Beats In Space producer Anatolian Weapons. Complimenting each other beautifully, the two sides bring a mix of rumbling basslines, frantic percussion and deep, low slung rhythms to send you into a dizzying trance.
