Anderson Chimutu is a first generation Malawian American who resides in the post-industrial town of South Bend, Indiana. Growing up near Chicago and Detroit, Chimutu was exposed to many legends of the local music scene. This influenced him to get involved with various progressive rock groups and instrumental bands. Now he focuses on solo productions, which integrate the use of granular processors. This new approach, coupled with the desire to represent his African heritage, has given birth to Fumbata. Echoes of the music he heard while still a child, such as conga and reggae, have become intertwined with tech/house under this pseudonym. His first offering as Fumbata came in the form of 2020's "Decoherence", released on the Hungarian label Exiles. He follows that up with "Equipoise", released on UK label Hard Return in 2021. Now he brings us "Actuation". The sonic qualities found within can be described as minimalist and obscure, yet very rhythmic. It's as if a machine has re-programmed itself, using onboard interface sounds, to make cryptic dance tracks. Chimutu wants to challenge the narrative surrounding African influenced music, and does so by creating what comes naturally to him. Putting forth an extension toward the future, while being cognizant of the history that has brought him to this point.

Born in Detroit but raised in Georgia, Gahs Owendek is accustomed to feeling out of his element. In most cases this can be a negative experience, but Gahs uses it to his advantage and expresses that in his music. He started producing at the age of 14 due to his obsession with the new Trap sound coming out of Atlanta at the time. Eventually soul, punk, and techno made its way into his source of influence, taking him in a new direction. Gahs has developed an eclectic palette for sounds and textures which create boundless possibilities. There are no genre restrictions or desire to fit in a specific mode. His wish is simply to make tracks which people can gyrate to.

High Sign is the brainchild of Joe Zeitlin from London, England. He began producing music at the age of 15 and within a short amount of time was performing live. Most of his shows were impromptu, taking place at squat parties where he would use his friend's sound system. The type of music being played was more aligned with breakcore, whereas now he delves into IDM territory. Zeitlin also composes classical music and works on soundtracks for film/video productions when he isn't creating electronic music. The inspiration for "Birdeater" came from the fact that he was being woken up every morning, about an hour before his alarm clock would go off, by the sound of a bird. At first he was quite irritated, but he eventually noticed a rave-esque rhythm to the bird's song. He translated this into a digital waveform, added more layers, and from there the track came into being. "Steaks" is a continuation of the same concept, using similar textures as the former track in this two-part package.

High Sign - Birdeater

The artist behind this track was recently in the hospital for a routine procedure. While in the recovery room before being discharged, he realized how dependent on machines our human lives have become. One device was constantly monitoring his heartbeat, while another would periodically check his blood pressure. If anything were to go wrong the nurses nearby, who were busy filling out paperwork and making phone calls, would be alerted. He looked around at other patients in this noisy room full of beeping equipment. He thought, perhaps in the future there will be those who deify machines and worship them as our saviors for all they have done. Our survival is in their mechanical hands. Not all will approve of such a practice though.

Gracing us with the brand new single "Secluded" is Ivan Fennel, formerly known as .ESC. After a brief hiatus, Fennel is back and ready to deliver thoughtful electronic music for the masses. When he's not producing music, you can catch him meditating and sparring at the local Hindu temples in Atlanta, Georgia.

Sunda is the solo project of Philip Davison, based out of Manchester, UK. He runs the label Hedera, which releases experimental music digitally and in cassette form. Apophenia is a collection of songs that explore depth in simplicity by building spaces for drones to fill, basslines to reflect and percussion to shift.

.ESC. (pronounced "escape") is the solo project of Ivan Fennell from Atlanta, Georgia, USA. System222 comes as a long overdue follow up to a single called Amnesia Darling released in 2017. Before this he had also released two albums, Polybius and Elixir, both released in 2016. On this new EP you can clearly hear a shift in production methods. Whereas before Fennell was drawn to more experimental sounds, here he goes for a straightforward narrative. Pulsating beats and sharp synthesizers give off a celebratory atmosphere, encapsulated by desolation. Brutalism comes to mind when hearing something like this; a type of architecture that is beautifully menacing. These new works come after some spiritual awakenings Fennell has experienced from hanging around a Buddhist temple in his neighborhood. An elderly woman has taken him under her wing, teaching him of their theological principles. In return Fennell helps around the temple and has become a part of the community, leading him to even being initiated in a sort of baptism ceremony. Be sure to stick around for more of this artist's offerings in the near future.
