Celeen In Light (electronica)

nana (2014), for clarinet and marimba, is a quiet, meditative work, written in honor of the impending birth of my first child. The piece begins as a song in slow motion, flickering in and out of focus. As it progresses, the underlying “nana” – Spanish for lullaby – takes shape. A bout of unison rhythmic fits interrupts the meditation, but the nana returns, complete and unadulterated, settling to rest, content. nana was commissioned by Sarunas Jankauskas, clarinet, and premiered February 9, 2014, in Wichita, KS.

Music for Large Array of Car Speakers at a Drive-in Theater (2015) was created for the TRAFFIC JAM project at the 2015 Fusebox Festival in Austin, TX. The piece was broadcast over a drive-in theater’s short-range FM signal, and concertgoers were asked to turn up their stereos, open the windows, get out and lie on their vehicles. Composed of short, rhythmic blips and long resonant drones, the music is designed to activate the vehicles’ bodies, providing both a sonic and a tactile experience for the individual vehicle/listener.

A Way Home
a bilingual opera for young audiences

A Way Home tells the story of Gracie, a Mexican-American teenager who must cope with the recent passing of her mother (Marisol), as she and her father (Thomas) travel to Mexico to lay Marisol to rest. As in the folklore of Michoacán, Marisol returns as a Monarch butterfly, joining the Monarch migration to the safe haven of the Oyamel firs. She flies south with her spiritual guide butterfly, Kárani, but struggles with grief as she observes Gracie and Thomas mourning her passing.

When Gracie and Thomas reach Michoacán, they meet Marisol’s father, Agustin, who has never forgiven Marisol for leaving Mexico, and blames Thomas for his estrangement with his daughter. The two men quarrel, but when Gracie gets lost in the butterfly reserve, they must reconcile their past and find her before night sets in. As the opera closes, Gracie comes to appreciate her Mexican heritage, and all three learn to find their own sense of home.

A Way Home - A New Kind of Family (HGO) (opera)

Three Experiments for Pianist (2009) is a collection of short pieces incorporating unconventional uses of the pianist’s hands. The first, note-clap, asks the pianist to alternate playing and clapping. The second, touch-stride, is solely comprised of silently-depressed notes – the only audible sounds, thus, produced by mistakes. The third, synth-ring, directs the pianist to place a cheap synthesizer within the piano, creating a double manual instrument. The piece was premiered by Kris Wettstein at Rice University’s Duncan Hall in March, 2009.

Lissajous (2012), for vibraphone and electronics

Lissajous, for vibraphone & electronics, is a sonic impression of a Lissajous curve – a graph of the system of parametric equations describing complex harmonic motion. Represented visually, such a curve resembles a three-dimensional knot. The musical material lies at the intersection of minimalist and 12-tone techniques, while the electronic elements – built from simple sinusoids, FM synthesis, and processed vibraphone and Thai gong recordings – serve as accompaniment and soloist throughout the piece. The vibraphone’s motor speed dial is manipulated as an effect, and granular processing, distortion and other guitar-style effects serve to further augment the instrument. All processing and cueing done in Max/MSP.
