We all know Nights are nicer when you are with your friends, so Ethimm asked some of his old friends and favorite acts to remix his recent EP ‘By Night’. Quite a few hopped on the bandwagon: Germany's most prolific remixer and DJs DJ Gerd Janson turned Ethimm’s ‘Lies’ into a relentlessly deep and driving house cut with drums reminiscent of New Order. Balearic boss Lexx stripped the track down to its bare vocal and rebuilt it with a 90ies New York vibe. Bell Towers added his prototypical leftfield approach to ‘Don’t Go Away’, while Berlin’s legendary DJ Kaos remade it into a classic acid stomper. The remix EP is completed by newcomer Never4Ever’s breakbeat treatment of the same track and swiss experimental queen Belia Winnewisser’s treatment of ‘Island Jam’.

By Night (Remixes)

After a string of diverse EPs on Swiss labels Light of Other Days & Subject To Restrictions and remixes from Gerd Jansen, Bell Towers and Lexx among others, Ethimm returns in autumn 2021 with his debut album. The record delivers snapshots of a hopeless romantic’s life packed into an eccentric mix of genres, all in the spirit of balearic. Fever dreams of Disco, New Wave, Dub and Pop echo throughout the 32 minutes of Ethimm’s self titled album. Distinctly nodding towards the 80ies without falling into cliché references, the album feels familiar yet uniquely contemporary.

Ethimm

Golden Days is the late completion of Ehimm’s EP trilogy on Light of Other Days and it continues exactly where the group left off 4 years ago. What started as the groups signature „tension music“, oscillating between dark repetition and moody improvisations is slowly morphing into a production style that features a heavy pop sensibility infused with conciliatory optimism. 

The opener and title track of the EP recounts the meeting of a new lover in an autumn sunset. Starting with dreamy piano chords, a rhythmic bass and handclaps, it provides a beautiful musical backdrop for Tizi’s longing voice. During the course of the track, modulating synths and plucked guitars join her vocals as she sings about the „Golden Days“ spent with her lover. 

Over & Out starts off in typical Ethimm fashion. Dubbed guitars, minimal beats and a sparse piano melody sets the tone for Elisabeth Thimm’s fragile vocal. In Over & Out Elisabeth negotiates her wish for freedom and how she breaks with her daily constraints. Albeit initially being drained in melancholy, the track ends on a musically hopeful note when a beautiful chord progression suddenly appears, colliding with an extended synth solo from outer space. 

On Echoes in the Distance, glorious arpeggios accompany a sophisticated 303-style bass line and haunting vocals. The track follows one of Elisabeth’s dreams into a frantic, nondescript, deserted backdrop and slowly morphes into the most ecstatic piece of the EP. The multi-layered arrangement combined with Ethimm’s yearning voice on top, sound like about 3 tracks seamlessly sticked together. The track ends in pure ecstasy and the listener is left with the exciting feeling of wanting more. 

The EPs finale is made up of the hopeful and minimalistic Day by Day, a track reminiscent of the balearic pop from the 1980ies. Gracefully and drained in beachside sunshine, Ethimm reminds us not to waste our days with unnecessary actions and focus on the beautiful small things in life.

Ethimm’s second album single Strange Life delivers and eery, dark and reflective take on the cynicism of first world consumerism set to the backdrop of global warming. Sneakily moving forward at a steady pace, a dubby bassline meets heavy piano chords in the chorus. A shuffled drum chugs along the sparse landscape, with chanteuse Palma Ada’s powerful vocal reminding the listener of the inevitability of their actions, no matter how much they „twist and turn around the truth“.

For the second album remix, Gabe Gurnsey of Factory Floor fame came to the rescue. His perfectly arranged tribute to 80ies proto dance music unfolds in perfect sparsity, with an array of squelchy synthesizers phasing in and dropping out, vocal samples chopped and pitched all over the place. Reminiscent of that one big Swiss band from back in the day, what was their color again? Green, blue, red? Well, my memory seems to be going downstream too…

Ethimm scratches on pop does a pirouette and then takes another direction. Both on stage and in his productions, the enigmatic producer from Zurich shows his unique style. After three releases on the cult label Light of Other Days, his new record for Subject to Restrictions is more danceable than ever. Previously approved by a multitude of DJs from London to Tokyo, 'Don't Go Away' delivers steady hands in the air peak time moments reminiscent of 90ies rave dancefloor dramas. On 'Lies (feat. T.A.V.)' the pitched voice perfectly intertwines with the throbbing disco beat and the sparse melodies, all to climax in sweeping arpeggio ecstasy. The slow groove of 'Island Jam' is peppered with a penetrating bassline and playful sound snippets. An EP for DJs and home listeners alike.

Zürich based producer Elisabeth Thimm (named after his great-grandmother) AKA @ethimm4ever follows up his trilogy of releases on acclaimed hometown label @light-of-other-days with his brand new "By Night EP" (due to be released via @subject-to-restrictions on September 25th). 

On the EP we hear Ethimm make a sharp turn from the 80s Berlin dub & 90s trip-hop infused sound of his previous work to embrace the dancefloor with his own off-kilter take on disco-house.

The B-side track "Don't Go Away" is a sublime and pulsating track that aims straight for that peak time club hour with a sense of urgency, it contains a classic, soulful vocal refrain and a steadfast synth beat.
