Sportsman's Hornpipe

Siroco (A. Curiale) - Bulgarian Dance (Trad.)
The medley of these two tunes born from the blending of two different musical themes and flavours that derive from the "melting pot" Mediterranean area . “Siroco” (= west warm wind) the composition of which result as an inspiration from Andalusian and consequently oriental traits in its perception, introduces a motif elaborated on a flowing-wavy 6/8 meter followed by a fast in tempo, five-part 11/8 meter (♫♫♫♪/♫♫) dance-tune belonging to the generic form of “kopanitsa”, one of the most and common traditional Bulgarian folk dance, whose pattern is however to be found in the whole Balcanic area.

Ethna music project is inspired by folk-world music traditions with the purpose to involve the audience on a trip through different cultures.

The choice of the name Ethna comes from the Greek word Ethnos (ἔθνος "nation") – the inherited English-language term for this concept is “folk” – and the Sicilian Etna volcano, on the slopes of which the violinist and creator of the project was born and lived for more than 40 years. Also Ethna is quite an old Gaelic name, meaning “fire”.

We play and create our music without considerations about any specific genre but with an urge to invent our own paths through the musical territories that inspire us, crossing the borders of countries and allow the meeting between different cultures.

In new compositions, folk traditions are considered as an underpinning influence or a box full of artistic information that can suggest other relationships.

The music itself, rather than stylistic conventions, tells us how to play it and the expression we want to give each tune becomes our guide to choosing instrumentation and playing techniques.
