Originally performed by the Estonian band Urban Symphony in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, this song tells of the endless journey the nomad faces through sandy deserts. Etnik Elektrik have turned it into a Tango-esque version and translated the lyrics to English.

This is the atmospheric introduction to Olaf Nightrose (Ólavur Riddararós) which we are currently rehearsing.

It tells the story of the brave Olaf Nightrose who is out hunting deer in the mountains when an Elvin maiden suddenly appears and propositions him. She suggests that he would be far happier drinking mead and dancing with her than being with with a mere mortal woman.

At first he's not sure what to do but finally says he must wed his girlfriend the next day and politely declines. The Elf maiden gives him an ultimatum - come and dance for the Elves, or drink poison and be ill and comatose for the next 7 years.

Ólavur decides to do the honourable thing and drinks the poison!

Introduction to Olaf Nightrose

These are two traditional Eastern European dances done as an instrumental mix. We've slowed down Na Purt to make it ethereal and sped up Trop Nalo Oro (The Big Dance) to make it fast - plus added non-traditional instruments such as Hurdy Gurdy and Taiko drums to fatten out the sound.

Etnik Elektrik is the brain-child of Nigel McLaughlin and Melinda Phillips who wanted to put together a sound that would appeal to folky audiences but also to a wider range of people who enjoy traditional Electronic Dance Music. Both of them had performed in a wide range of lineups covering everything from Big Band, to Indie Rock and Irish folk to Klezma, but neither had approached anything with an Electronica angle.

The use of Electronics means that we can encompass a broad range of sounds not normally accessible to an accoustic band. This includes things like Macedonian Gaidi (Bagpipes) played live via the Electronic Wind Instrument through to samples of Finnish Kulning or Cattle Calling songs played in the background - including 'a dying Bedouin' as one particular sample is fondly referred to.
