'PREGHIERA' for Orchestra (Excerpt) - Hansol Choi

Dedicated to violinist Carina Yee, Verdigris is inspired by the Robert Frost poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay”, which represents, change, uncertainty, and impermanence.  The first line from the poem reads “Nature’s first green is gold”, which to me evoked lots of implications about color and synesthetic association, leading me to title the piece Verdigris.  Verdigris is a blue-green rust or petina on brass or copper from oxidization.  The music is built around the idea of decay, and on a fundamental level, a color and textural change over time.  This gradual obscurity is portrayed through the lens of rusting metal, creating an eerie and ethereal sound world.

3°(삼도/Sahm-doh) for Orchestra

This piece is written in loving memory of my grandmother. For the past few years, I have been desiring to write a piece based on the sounds I grew up with. After my grandmother passed away in April 2018, I decided to write a piece with my sonic memories of her and dedicate it for her. 

The title “Matdol” means a millstone in Korean. A millstone was the first thing that came to my mind when I thought of my memories of her. When I was young, I loved watching her cooking and listening to the sounds from her kitchen. She used to use a millstone to grind beans and grains instead of using an electronic blender. I loved listening to the sounds created when the runner stone spun above the base. I experimented with timbre in order to recreate these sounds, through circular motions, on different instruments. Thinking of my grandmother putting me to sleep as a baby, I quoted a traditional Korean lullaby, “Ja Jang Ga”, which is introduced by the harp. This theme is then developed throughout the piece and builds to the final climax.
