"Etherealvana"

Axis (Live at Berklee)

Garuda is an ancient mythical bird from the Hindu era, which is also portrayed as Indonesia's national symbol. It carries the five pillars of the country's ideology, "Pancasila". 

Commissioned by the Boston Latin School, it is written for a wind ensemble. Through this piece, I try to capture the majestic and elegance of the creature, by incorporating Indonesian ethnic colors and enthusiastic rhythmic elements.

Every sip of Matcha imbues a sensation that’s both pleasing and enjoyable. Its flavor exudes complexity, striking the perfect blend of earthy, bitter notes and elegantly sweet undertones. Its warmth emanating your soul like the thawing of the winter snow, leaving you in a relaxed state of mind.

This piece is a reflection of my love for Matcha, the joy I find within it and, ultimately, my relish for the next cup.

The fine distinction between the ‘Real’ and ‘Imaginary’ is a human pursuit that’s spanned for centuries, and it is the philosophical core of this piece. When in a dream, what occurs often feels real, to the point where it’s indistinguishable from the alternative. Where is the line that separates these states of being? 

I often find myself trapped in a haunting nightmare, but the realization of the ‘imaginary’ leaves me feeling safe from the darkness. I asked myself how can I express all this into a piece, and I decided that it needs to be orchestral, to be able to experiment with different colors and textures to depict a dream-like feel. 

I came up with the main theme, which is introduced by the trumpet in the early stages of the piece. The theme, fleeting in its nature, questions the state in which it exist, the ‘real’ or the ‘imaginary'. It is then responded by the woodwinds, but they themselves are unsure. The marimba in the second part, supported by very rhythmical orchestral backgrounds, is a reflection of a beating heart, one that’s filled with adrenaline. Moreover, the restatement of the themes through-out the whole piece represents different scenarios of a dream and how they can easily turn into total chaos, leaving you behind breathless and in wonder.

The Real and the Imaginary leads us to a journey of one’s fantasy, letting us walk through different scenes of hallucinations and elements of emotions: terror, love, despair, hope, and surprise. While the specific scenes are open to the listener’s interpretation, the sense of journey is the same; the question posed remains ambivalent.
