Subverting compositional and design tropes each step of the way, the Zonra project has maintained a striking consistency in its escape from the norms of conventional electronic music. Straddled somewhere between the dance-centric sound of contemporary bass music producers and the aural experimentation developed by IDM pioneers, Jackson Hale achieves a stable balance between groove and intrigue with each subsequent release, moving that needle closer to either end whenever the need arises. In time-tested fashion, his latest LP is a work of beauty from every angle, and as such, The Rust is incredibly excited to premiere Time Is A Tool as our 61st label release.

Previous Zonra records have featured an amalgam of shredded synthesis, mean breakdowns, and carefully threaded melodic elements. Unsurprisingly, Hale flipped the script entirely for Time Is A Tool; The LP’s opening moments involve smooth harmonies egressing into smooth cadence, and that relationship carries on throughout each track. Choice waves of tension and release, told through the intentional splaying of tones and textures into glitched-out symphonies, creates a permeable catharsis within each fold of the record, slowly churning the listener towards the album’s zenith. Opting for slow, caressing tempos and chord phrases reminiscent of serene lullabies, the traditional throaty bass lines and hyper-compressed downbeats are put out to pasture in favor of a record filled to the brim with particularly intentional and resoundingly magical moments of introspection and rest. For those keen on finding their next sonic journey amidst a crowd with a dancefloor focus, Time Is A Tool is assuredly the album you’ve been searching for.

On that note: This is the original EVAC remix of Crunch's 'Sigh-Fi' - Prior to the abbreviated edit that was officially released on the Crunch 2' LP on Colony in late 2002.

While this version was previously unreleased, It was used in collaboration with Play Airways for their short film entitled 'The Horrible Sounds' which came together around 2007. You can watch the video via the link below...

Weston may not be a name that is widely recognized yet, but it's one that we’re certain has a very bright future. Hailing from Kelowna, BC, he is another example of this region’s immense and deep talent pool. Previously releasing music under the moniker Subclaim, Bryce has been continually improving his chops and working with other producers and vocalists. He has released music on Mat The Alien’s stellar Really Good Recordings and has also remixed Aufect alumni, Half Normal. When he sent us this juicy demo we knew the time was nigh to start working together. ~
This EP is a collection of 4 precision engineered cuts - A perfect balance of Deep and Dark atmospheres that’s lush, warm and brimming with character. These tracks brought us back to the era when we first fell in love with Dubstep and serve as a reminder to why the genre is still alive and well. Weston has enlisted the immense talents of MC Ill Chill, vocalist Sarah Zad and fellow Kelowna-based producer, Toltek on the EP and it shows this young producer’s adept skill in really unifying the tracks and creating a compelling, cohesive package. ~
The EP starts off with the title track, “Ritual”, a dark and brooding Dubstep anthem featuring Ill Chill’s signature baritone refrain over top of sparse but precise drums and mega tonne sub bass. An ode to the magic herb that BC has become well-known for. “Electric Vibration” brings the intensity down and smooths out the vibes with mellow instrumentation and an haunting saxophone riff. Sarah Zad’s buttery smooth verse recounts a deep passion and the magic of a shared love. Ill Chill’s verse tells the other side of the story and we’re left wondering where the wet spot is. “Judgement” is a moody Dubstep stepper that is cloying with it’s simplicity, yet it’s haunting chord stab and sparse vocal stay with you long after listening. Lastly, “Spectraminds” sees Weston and Toltek link up to create a unique, psychedelic footwork cut. Interesting polyrhythmic kicks provide the foundation for saturated bass stabs and an hypnotic arpeggiated sine wave, punctuated by dripping FX stabs.

It takes its time developing from start to finish, cultivating a complete musical immersion.
