Obviously growing up in Detroit, funk music was always a part of my DNA so for this edition of my Poolside Mixtape I decided to go with the funk, the whole funk and nothing but the funk. This was by far one of the most difficult mixes I've ever put together. Due to the fact that the timing of a lot of these songs was not perfectly syncopated I ended up having to dump them into Logic and re-edit them so they were quantized properly. I spent countless hours finding songs that not only worked for this mix but that I personally liked and would play. I also wanted to try and cover the whole spectrum of Funk in under an hour of music.  I do lean a little more towards the funk from the 80's only because I'm a sucker for synth bass. Regardless, I'm very happy with the way it turned out and I think this mix is more than worthy of being dropped by the pool while you're sipping on margaritas. Koastal Mix Volume 8

I've gotten so many requests to put a mix out under my Afro House alias ‘Rhodes’ so here ya go. On Sunday I got to @discover.lala and just hit record and started playing. Zero planning, zero editing, one take. Every time I’m playing music live I try to make sure it sounds like a studio quality mix. I think you’ll definitely hear the attention to detail in this one. My last release on @plastikpeoplerecordings was 5 years ago, but i'm happy to be back with a new 2 tracker on one of my all-time favorite labels!

Belle Isle Boogie is the title track on the EP and another little love letter to my home town. Belle Isle is a tiny island in the middle of the Detroit River that separates Detroit and Canada. It used to be wiiiiild back in the day but i've heard it's pretty nice these days. The footage in the vid is from The New Dance Show (Detroit 1990). I hope you dig it!

The idea for the poolside mixes came while i was drinking rum in a plastic kiddie pool a few years ago.  At that particular moment I wanted to hear something besides house music.  Something funkier… something disco-ier. ..something OLD SCHOOL. The first two editions of the poolside mix are purely music from the 70's and 80's with a few newer tunes thrown in the shuffle. For volume 3 I wanted to go in a bit of a different direction and showcase some of the amazing Nu-Disco tunes that are out there right now. Deep and funky as hell….  For me as an artist it's important to explore different genres of electronic music while also paying homage to my roots of funk and disco. The poolside mixes are not something i would play or want to hear in a club necessarily. It's the music I want to hear while sipping cocktails in the hot sun.
Grab some rum, jump in a pool somewhere (kiddie or full size) and enjoy!
