The initial four bars of the piece were present in a composition guide originally intended to be played on a piano. Inspired by the simple four-bar melody and a chat I had with a friend about modulations, I developed a minor “rhapsody” loosely based on its original melody and chords. I have decided to keep the piano as the solo instrument due to its versatility and its ability to play complex melodies and harmonies. I experimented with modulations as seen between the different sections of the piece from C major to C minor to F major and D minor. 

Composing this piece allowed me to grow my understanding of tonality in terms of relationships between different keys, making it easier for me to write key changes and experiment with more chords.

Dmitri Shostakovich: 5 Pieces for 2 Violins and Piano

This is a transcript and recording of the first movement, Präludium I Prelude from Shostakovich's Five Pieces for Two Violins and Piano, arranged by Levon Atovmyan.

The recasting of the Five Pieces from their original versions was done by Shostakovich’s friend Levon Atovmyan (1901–73), a Turkmen composer, arranger, and man-about-the-music-industry. In the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s, Atovmyan created many composer-approved suites comprising movements from assorted Shostakovich works, including the four Ballet Suites and the suites from the film scores for The Gadfly (1955) and Hamlet (1932). Atovmyan apparently assembled the Five Pieces by 1970, and they were published under the rubric Five Pieces for Two Violins and Piano. The parts can also be played by two violas.

The Prelude derives from Shostakovich’s music for The Gadfly, where it is titled “Guitars” and was to be played by two guitars. Atovmyan had already transcribed this movement in his orchestral Suite from The Gadfly (Opus 97a), in which guise it may be familiar to some listeners. In that setting, he mixed in some music from a separate Gadfly section, but in the Five Pieces he reverts to the text Shostakovich originally wrote (though with bowed strings instead of plucked ones). It balances on the thin boundary between pensive Russian melancholy and genial Viennese good cheer. The two string instruments track each other almost always in the same rhythm, though in harmony, a characteristic that maintains for nearly the entire suite.

Tambourin – A. E. Grétry

André Ernest Modeste Grétry’s Tambourin is a lively, dance-like piece from his opera Aspasie. Characterised by energetic rhythms and rapid string crossings, the piece captures the spirited charm of the traditional Provençal tambourin dance. While rooted in the Classical era, it echoes the rhythmic vitality of Baroque dance music, making it a favourite for violinists seeking a bright and playful showcase. Its inclusion in Suzuki Violin School, Volume 8 offers a fun challenge for advanced students, showcasing Grétry’s flair for melody and rhythm.

Tambourin

'Ashokan Farewell' is a musical piece composed by the American folk musician Jay Ungar in 1982. For many years, it served as a goodnight or farewell waltz at the annual Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps, run by Ungar and his wife Molly Mason, who gave the tune its name, at the Ashokan Field Campus of SUNY New Paltz in Upstate New York. The tune was used as the title theme of the 1990 PBS television miniseries The Civil War.

This arrangement is an edition for solo violin, featuring virtuosic double-stops and chords that add hints of harmony to the iconic melody.

Hi Walkers! It's Walker59321 again and this is my fourth attempt in doing a remix.
This time, I rewrote the melody of the chorus and wrote some guitar leads with FaithJoker and Crateris (formerly known as CaeserKnight), who are both bedroom producers as well. This time is the first time for me to collaborate with others to make a remix. I hope you would like it!
