Umair Chachar, born and raised in Pakistan, now a resident of Chicago, a fanatic for music his entire life, has been exploring the universe through music with his production for a decade through various unknown aliases. Char, his current musical persona, solidified in 2023. It is a lens into his heart, memories, and perspectives of life. 
 
He believes that music is a divine entity and the act of interacting with it is akin to communing with the entity in a religious way. Whether it is producing, mixing, dancing or simply listening to it. The merger of his Sufi upbringings with his love for all things dark has led him into the world of exploring music in a near Shamanistic way. 
 
Char hurls himself into a state of dark hypnosis through music, and those who follow the path are welcomed by the horrors of the void that are being communed with. 
 
"And in that void, one truly sees how beautiful the dimmest candles can be."

This mix is centered around four rituals by Nusku, tapping into specific emotions and stories. It explores the concepts of musical cyber shamanism and invites the listener to surrender to the dark & hypnotic voices of the world.

A number that has represented life/light and death/darkness in various cultures.

We are so excited to present our 32nd entry into our PPRZ Podcast series by ephemeral objects! Dive into this hour + of deep, textured and thoughtfully selected techno. 

ephemeral objects is a DJ, VJ, music producer, digital and video artist based on unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Nations (Vancouver, Canada). She has created music videos for forward-thinking Canadian electronic music producers and labels, such as Mood Hut and NAGA. She has performed visuals at influential music venues and festivals throughout British Columbia. ephemeral objects is also half of i+eo an a/v project with IHA, and a resident of Acceleration Radio. Her love of dance music and interest in DJing started in childhood in the late 90s and early 2000s when she stayed up late religiously watching Electric Circus on MuchMusic, the legendary Canadian live dance music show. One of her earliest electronic music purchases was Eiffel 65’s Europop album in grade 4 from HMV in Metrotown, Burnaby, which laid the groundwork for a lifelong appreciation of techno and its various permutations. It wasn’t until recently after finishing graduate school that she revisited and indulged in her interest in DJing, which is now a creative outlet that brings her fulfilment and joy.

My process/mix
This mix captures the type of techno that I deeply appreciate and a space I want to stay in for a while. I love the intentional listening aspect that comes with mixes. I tend to start with ambient/experimental as foreplay for listeners. The mix gradually gets faster, ending with one of my favourite techno-trance tunes that feels like a homage to the early 2000s. I approach DJing similarly to how I approach VJing: psychedelic, hypnotic, euphoric, paying special attention to details, and layering of textures. The beauty of DJing is sculpting moments where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. For me, this is achieved through looping, long blends, and complementing different phrases of tracks. I recorded this mix at home with a DJJ-FLX10 using four decks. Although I mostly mix with three, I use the extra deck to quickly cue the next track to sustain momentum.

I carefully think about the music that I play. I believe that who we choose to play is a vote for who we want to see in music. For this reason, I strive to curate sets to ensure a diverse representation of people, especially producers and labels by femmes and people of colour. Lately, I have been excited by producers and labels from across the Pacific and from the diaspora, which is exemplified in this mix. Big shoutout to Lord Loubbit and CTAFAD for sharing their unreleased music with me. In a small way, I aspire to add more representation in the space of techno that I love, so that others who are also queer, femme, and come from immigrant refugee backgrounds can see themselves in it too. Evanti is a DJ collective comprised of Shanti and Evan (Scum.ee). They DJ separately and together, enamored by the surreal and haunting side of electronic music. They host Otherworldly Ambiguity, an experience centered around the phenomenon of liminality, occupying the spaces in between and outside of pre-existing concepts and rigid categories.  

Shanti is also a member of Chicago-based collective, Research & Development, "a music event/mix series focused on nurturing new sounds, experiences and atmospheres while exploring the music and culture it was born or mutated from."
