Note 1: The Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) are databases that catalogue and run analytics on leading academic journals and articles in the social sciences. They are useful research tools for academics to stay abreast of the knowledge in their fields. They are one of the many academic products owned by the American corporations and is certainly not the only citation indexes in the diverse humanities and social sciences. Yet in Taiwan its status has been reconfigured as the golden—sometimes the only—standard for reviewing faculty. SSCI and SCI (Social Science Index) are known by every employed or unemployed academic in Taiwan simply as “I.”

Note 2: Female faculties who have given birth to one child during the review period get two extra years to bring up their academic output. Regulation may vary depending on the institution.

How can this girl power be anything but inspiring?


My power tool of writing fell out of use
My condition of laboring went into the blues
Was it motherhood or the school?
It matters less now ‘cause
Surveillance and self-discipline
That’s what a mother and a teacher have in common
They also share something else, let me tell you about it


The time to feel demoralized
The right to feel sympathized
The desire to take a break
and carry the self against the game

d.s.g is a choice on power tool

Sure I’m not a rapper, and I’m far from marginal
Writing is my privilege, publishing is my job

Let’s get one thing straight up front
Being a mother ain’t intuitive

Many savvy mommies are self-taught researchers
They read, they think, they observe, and ask questions
They use their wisdom to make daily decisions
All for the well-being of one tiny human

Trained feminists aren’t always child-care experts
They just have a way with expression
French feminist Kristeva once wrote 
Motherhood is a “slow, difficult…apprenticeship 
in attentiveness, gentleness, forgetting oneself” 

Karen Thompson made a portrait of a mother
“She looked so calm and cool on the outside. 
But on the inside she was a complete control freak” 
A mother of twins and a professor of education
Tamar Hager in Tel Aviv makes me wanna weep
I see me in her words, all torn up in motherhood 
Having it all or all fluxed-up?!
No offense but the hardship makes good storytelling

War stories make them look like all-mighty queens
Graceful words make them transcendental stars
Inspiring? You bet
Useful? I am less sure
In my own everday, they feel more and more foreign
I’m a feminist too, and I want something more colloquial
Like this, “Being a mother really kicks your ass” 

A literature review won’t tell me how I became a mother
It’s time to write my story and uncover its power
The one-and-only sorcerer Tsai An-bu will keep me real
By getting me wet and sticky right from the ground level


I can’t have it all.

I know, I grew up on this dope

It’s not the feminine mystique
It’s the girl power mystique
Meet the role models in my profession
Academics who schedule their motherhood along with
Teaching, grants, steady publication, home-cooked meals, and 
quality time with children*
How do they juggle so gracefully?*
Whoever said they had it easy?
Maria Lahman calls herself a “Mother Liar” 
Carolyn Segal took eight years off 
I’m grateful for their revelation
But academia likes little deviation

Don’t be fooled by your eyes
Your sorcerer takes no lies
 “Mommy is mommy, Mommy is not a doctor”
When you’re worried about how you might look
That’s when things begin to go crooked*
Life is full of trade-offs
It’s time to get some perspective

They can have it all, and I can have a choice
It’s not a bad thing to hear this voice
It’s not the end of the world to modify the definition of achievement
Let’s modify the definition of achievement
Beyond institutional cement  
Remember this d.s.g.
Take pride in your laboring, though it may be slow
Take care of your genba, though the audience may be small
Forget the pompous thought
“I’ll quit my job and stay at home”
A child is full-time job
Have some respect for the women and men who do their jobs right
My mom chose me over a full-time job
Now she watches my son in the day
My partner puts our child in bed every night
Though you still feel all fluxed-up (and guilty as hell)
You got no right to tinker with a career change

Have some respect for your apprenticeship
My sorcerer is a tough boy who forbids misuse of magic
All I got is a blabbering mouth
Spitting amateurishly about my hardship
No parents have it easy
So don’t be fooled by these words
