The Michael Levin Base in Jerusalem’s Machane Yehuda market area is a unique home away from home for lone soldiers and those from abroad doing national service. Co- director Bonnie Rosenbaum speaks with Eve Harow about their mission and challenges; the services provided and the importance of this community for these young people who have no traditional support system of family and friends. They have an Evening of Celebration on June 20th honoring British Colonel Richard Kemp which Eve will be emceeing, and many other opportunities for involvement in a center that, in the spirit of Michael Levin z’l, punches way above its weight.

Yedidya Harush lives in the Negev town of Shlomit, just north of Sinai which his parents were forced to leave to Egyptian rule and just east of Atzmona in Gush Katif from where they were expelled in 2005. Eve Harow speaks via choppy zoom to him in his backyard to the backdrop of explosions as they’re now on the front line of the war being waged in Rafiah. On Sunday 4 soldiers were killed and many wounded at Kerem Shalom nearby, where ‘humanitarian aid’ trucks deliver food to the non combatants-but-far-from-innocent jihadists- while our hostages die in the Gaza tunnels. He speaks of the bravery of his neighbors on October 7th and the price they paid; the strength of their community and the concerns for his children.
The beauty of our nation, our faith and the bigger picture are what keep him going. Yedidya experienced many miracles in his 4 months of combat, but there is much to be done to ensure a lasting peace.
Because, as we keep repeating, never again is now.

Rejuvenation: Health and Warfare

Serial educator Dr. Daniel Rose and Eve Harow have a thought provoking, lively exchange of ideas on why the upcoming Passover night really will be different than all others, given the social distancing  imposed on us due to the COVID-19 pandemic. How can we use the loss of some personal choices to engage in a fresh way with the centuries old traditional Haggadic text? The newly released, beautifully illustrated and Israel-centered Koren Magerman Youth Haggada was developed by Dr. Rose with the intent to keep children as the focus of the Passover Seder as we retell our people’s escape from bondage to eventual national freedom. The evening’s unique interactive rituals and Haggada reading are paradigms for educating children- and adults- of all types, over all times. If we can approach this year’s holiday,  even in its potentially upsetting  context, as an opportunity to do things outside the (matzo) box then maybe it will still redeem itself.
