Kitty Love

Wu Xing Western Works was inspired by the idea of the five elements (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth) also known as Wu Xing and each movement reflects the emotions that are tied to element. Each element has positive and negative emotions tied to them that are opposites and this is especially reflected in the water and fire movements. The movements move from the negative emotional associations to the positive emotional associations by the end of the work, this is because it helped me to make a structure for the piece and I wanted to the gradual change between emotions. The emotional structure reflects how the movements grow in terms of intensity and movement as the first two movements grow to the third, which is the climax of the work and then start to fade down in the last two movements as the emotions become more peaceful. The pieces flow on from one movement to the next due to each of the elements being interconnected and I wanted that to be reflected in the music.

I was lucky enough to have this piece recorded by the NZSM CMPO 383 Recording class. Thomas Voyce was also kind enough to mix the session into a quality recording.
