Safe is an emotional Indie-Rock song with a driving groove and busy arrangement. Layers of acoustic guitars setting the harmony, driven guitar lead sounds, and a lead vocal supported by dozens of backing vocal harmonies throughout. 

The lyrics of the song begin as though the writer is providing support to a friend/lover going through a tough time. But in the bridge, it is revealed that this "friend" is actually the writer himself. The chorus is then re-framed as a self-compassionate message.
