New Jersey outfit The Jack Moves present ‘Somebody’s Watching You,’ the debut single from their soon-to-be released third album. 

Known for their distinctive take on East Coast r&b and soul, the duo’s latest track is their most ambitious yet when it comes to genre-skipping—infused with 80s instrumentals that nod to The Manhattans and Blue Magic, and a grooving rap outro by Jersey local (and frequent collaborator) Panama Brim. 

With its infectious, ebullient hook and jaunty flute, ‘Somebody’s Watching You’ might seem like a sweet paean to longing, to desire—but it’s also an ode to looking in its many forms, to the interplay of gazes online and IRL, to observing, being observed, and performing for the eyes of others.

Adan Jodorowsky had led the kind of charmed life that will leave you shaking your head in wonder. As a youngster, he was given his first dance lesson by the Godfather of Soul James Brown, got his first guitar lesson from none other than George Harrison, and was the star of a feature film (Santa Sangre, directed by his father, famed surrealist filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky) by the age of 10. 
Now at the age of 34, he is a bona fide rock star in his native France and throughout South America, able to sell out the 10,000-seat National Auditorium in Mexico City and to perform alongside Foo Fighters and MGMT as part of 2012's Lollapalooza Chile. 
Add all that experience and excellence up, and it is long past time for folks in the U.S. and beyond to take notice of this singular talent. And he has just the album to help get the rest of the world to shine the spotlight in his direction. 
Recording under the stage name Adanowsky, the French popster has taken a sharp left turn away from the lush folk pop of his 2011 U.S. debut Amador, an album that found him collaborating with Devendra Banhart and exploring the deepest romantic desires and heartbreaks of the titular character (the name translates to "The Lover"). 
With his latest full-length ada, he has put aside the emotion and is purely concentrating on physical pleasures. "I wanted something sweaty and gross," Jodorowsky says. "I wanted to feel the drugs on this album. I'm not a drug addict at all but I wanted you that same feeling in the music." 
Recorded at [TK] studio in the suburbs of Paris backed by Vincent and Xavier Polycarpe of the French pop group Gush, ada is a sexy throwback to the early work of icons like Prince and Michael Jackson replete with shimmy-shake disco rhythms, vintage '80s R&B pulsations, and a whole lot of glammy attitude. 
To aid in their role of creating a record that sounds as luscious as possible, Jodorowsky and the Polycarpe brothers played everything live in the studio using equipment made before 1975. That also meant spending a long time poring over mixes with engineer David Lerner (Daft Punk, N.E.R.D.) to capture that perfect Controversy/Off The Wall spirit. But as ada's collection of slinky, dance party starters proves, all that effort was more than worth it. 
"I want to give hope with this record," Jodorowsky explains. "I want people to have fun listening to it. I want you to wake up in the morning and put this record on, or put it on in their car, and dance and feel the power!"

Adanowsky - Dancing To The Radio

The Jack Moves’ latest single ‘Seabra', is the second offering from the band’s forthcoming project ‘Cruiserweight’(?). ‘Seabra’ is a breezy and romantic, mid-tempo ballad, harkening back to Philly soul acts like Teddy Pendergrass or Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, but infused with a Brazilian samba rhythm, à la Astrud Gilberto. This hybrid of sweet soul & samba, combined with lush arrangements, a head-nodding beat, and soaring emotive vocals could easily conjure a moment from The Avalanches joyous sample catalog. ‘Seabra’ could comfortably sit among contemporary tracks by artists such as Silk Sonic, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, or Durand Jones & The Indications, yet still manages to bring something unique. The Jack Moves enable disparate elements to coexist within sweet soul/R&B, much like the Brazilian community in their home-base of Newark, NJ has become an intrinsic part of the city's character. Seabra is perfect for summery playlists.

Optimism can be a hard quality to come by, especially in a world that seems to pride itself on cynicism and negativity. But that’s exactly why we need a band like Gulp in our lives. The lush Welsh/Scottish pop group is happy to consider itself an antidote to the creeping pessimism of modern life.
“It’s what comes out of us naturally,” says Gulp’s vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Lindsey Leven. “Everything that you’re writing from the heart is a reflection of what’s going on in your life.” Her husband and bandmate Guto Pryce agrees, “It’s even in times of adversity that we try to remain optimistic.”
In 2014, Gulp has plenty to be enthused about! Pryce has a musical legacy to be proud of, having spent the past 20 years as a founding member of UK pop superstars Super Furry Animals. And Pryce and Leven are both glowing from the joy of writing and recording music together.
But even amid that, there could have been a turn towards more moody and desperate material. Instead, the pair, with bandmates Gid Goundrey (guitars) and Gwion Llewelyn (drums/vocals), came out with Season Sun, a fuzzy, buzzing upbeat ode to the changing seasons, watching plants grow, dancing, and as they sing on “Vast Space,” being willing to “open up your heart and let the love flood in.”
The “vast space” isn’t just the one within, either. The natural world played a key part in the creation of these songs, some written while Pryce and Leven were vacationing in the California desert, others while road tripping through the Scottish Highlands (you’ll find images of these adventures with the album art) .
There’s some connection to be found between these sounds and what Pryce accomplished as a member of the Furries – the two projects share a love of warm vintage synth sounds and a burnished brand of psychedelia. But Gulp expresses itself with almost throwback sentiments. Apart from a few moments, Season Sun could easily be mistaken this for a lost gem of the late ‘60s unearthed by a studious crate digger.
For as verdant as Gulp’s sound is, the core belongs the musical relationship between Pryce and Leven. When the project began back in 2012, their first efforts centered on just the couple and their trusty drum machine, a Roland 505 donated to them by Leven’s yoga teacher. And even amid the fine contributions of Goundrey and Llewelyn, the heart of each song is the harmonic interplay between Levin’s Leven vocals and the warming synth and bass notes from her musical co-pilot.
Gulp’s humble beam of multicolored musical light has already made its way through the band’s native UK thanks to a well loved lead single “Game Love” and a tour supporting Django Django. The quartet is now looking to taking their message of optimism through the US with their first stop being this year’s SXSW Festival and hopefully some more touring to round out the rest of 2014.

Gulp - Vast Space

Guy Blakeslee (The Entrance Band) delivers his first solo album in ten years. Produced by Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah, Yeah Yeahs), Ophelia Slowly, takes a step back from the dense rock sound his LA-based neo-psychedelic trio is known for, delving instead into a sparse, spooky dreamscape where drum loops, synthesizers, and the occasional acoustic guitar frame his always haunting vocal delivery. Recorded in New York in the fall of 2013, the album focuses on Blakeslee’s recent descent; wrestling with demons and angels alike, he has come through it victoriously, expressing the hopeful message of a modern day spiritual. 
If this album conveys a type of conversion, Blakeslee doesn’t want you to forget his appreciation for tragedy; the title itself is a reference to Shakespeare’s Hamlet heroine. Recording under his own name for the first time, Blakeslee seems to hint that the intention for this project is intimate and vulnerable, and as anyone who has caught his recent solo dates opening for Spiritualized or Cat Power will attest, he delivers on that promise. 
Blakeslee has always been a re-interpreter of early American Delta blues. On Ophelia Slowly, his love for the genre is felt not only in his upside down, left-handed electric guitar playing, but also in his soulful howl: needing no accompaniment at all, it’s as comfortable in an Echo Park nightclub as it would a 1920’s Mississippi street corner. “In a way, the words and the vocal performance are the focus of this record,” explains Blakeslee. “The music is there to create a mood for the voice to exist in. It’s the first time there’s not a lot of effects on my vocals, there’s a little reverb, but it doesn’t sound far away. In the past I was covering up my voice, turning it down and drowning it out.” 
Allowing his vocals to appear front and center, as opposed to his impressive guitar playing, seems to be a decision inspired, in part, by Chris Coady, who not only recorded Blakeslee’s last solo album, Wandering Stranger (Fat Possum), but was the first person to record him at all. The two grew-up together in Baltimore and seem to share an unspoken communication, having collaborated on music together since high school. “[Coady] came to see me play in New York last April and said, ‘I had chills the whole time you were playing.’ He was emotionally connected to the project in a way that I couldn’t find in anyone else,” explains Blakeslee. “It’s great to go back and work with an old friend. His work gets increasingly better every time,” says Coady. 
Ophelia Slowly was recorded almost entirely at Coady’s studio in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, a neighborhood that informed these eight songs as much as anything else. During the first part of the production, Blakeslee was sleeping in the studio and at night he would walk around Tompkins Square Park and the surrounding neighborhood, listening to the day’s recordings and finishing up lyrics in his head. The opening number, “Haunted City,” written originally about Los Angeles, explores the idea of returning to one’s old stomping grounds, but no longer feeling as if you belong, which hits close to home for Blakeslee -- “I used to live in NY and I haven’t spent more then a couple days there in many years. So there’s ghosts of things that happened in the past in that area.”

In fact, Ophelia Slowly is bookended with songs that examine cities and the idea of home. The slightly more optimistic closer, “City in the Rain,” speaks to resolution and as Blakeslee explains, “getting back on the journey where it all began.” “I took the final mix of “City in the Rain” to the park in the morning,” says Blakeslee, who has an eye for serendipity and a love for the notion of transcendence. “It began raining just as the rain sound [that appears as an intro to the song] came through my headphones.”

Blakeslee’s 2003 version of Skip James’s “I’m So Glad” is currently heard in the soundtrack for Spike Jonze’s Academy Award nominated film ‘Her,’ appearing as the infectious song Scarlett Johansson’s O.S voice/character shares with Joaquin Phoenix, confessing she can’t stop listening to it. Hopefully Ophelia Slowly will produce a similar result.

He’s sat behind the drum kit for everyone from Eddie Vedder, Joey Santiago, Ziggy Marley and Jack Johnson to legends like Jimmy Cliff and David Gilmour. He has explored Afro-Cuban rhythms and percussion via Ritmo Y Canto, dabbled in dubby electronic reggae with Culver City Dub Collective and to the far edges of soul-jazz with “Blue Painted Walls In Faraway Places”. He has never made the same record twice. So is it a surprise that Regardless of the Dark is his first album as a front man? Stepping out from behind the drum kit to create a collection of songs that can stand alongside those of his peers?

At least a little bit, because it nearly didn’t happen. Playing alongside so many great musicians had made coming up with his own material all the more challenging. He threw his own first record out because he wanted to go back and do it again until it felt right. The final result is this ten song voyage from “Brazil” to “Reno”. It took nearly three years to record the album – on the road on a laptop, in random studios on off days, and at home in Topol’s garage in Venice, CA.

Focusing less on rhythmic based songs as in previous projects, Regardless of the Dark  aims at narratives and lyrical storytelling about life in the northern Nevada and California mountains. Traveling the world with great songwriters and artists also helped plant the seeds for this batch of songs to come to life. The sound of the feel of the album is influenced heavily by hours spent on the road reading books and listening to music, hearing other people tell their stories over and over. The literary influences can be heard throughout. The works of Junot Diaz, Cormac McCarthy and Haruki Murakami’s The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle all provided their own kind of inspiration here.

Always buoyed by the presence of good friends and collaborators, Topol has assembled a number of talented musicians to flesh out the instrumentation here. “Hollow,” was recorded in Barcelona with The Pinker Tones, and sparkles with castanets and melodica.  Dengue Fever’s David Ralicke lends his horn work to “Lemon Yellow” and “Brazil,” while “Crystal Bay” was recorded in East LA with the help of Ozomatli’s Raul Pacheco. Mason Jennings lends his talents to a number of Topol’s songs including additional vocals, guitar and keyboard work on “The Captain” as well as the album’s closing track, “Reno.”

At its base, Regardless of the Dark ruminates on a sense of place, and how leaving your roots behind can help you discover that they were what made you unique in the first place. Likewise, as his own musical roots stretch out well below the surface, on this record Adam Topol has shown he can tell stories and weave melodies alongside the best of his mentors and peers.
