DJ JM - Abnormal EP

Abnormal is the sound of DJ JM ratcheting it up a notch, both in production-value and musical creativity. The title itself stands as a compact explainer of DJ JM's constant sonic assignment – Abnormal consolidates years of JM's work to keep club music weird and unexpected. Retaining the chunky percussion and quick-stepping rhythms he built his name on, the EP also contains intricate, cleverly designed sound-beds, and extends the menacing electro-techno swagger DJ JM began exploring on his previous No Days Off and Squash EPs.

Preferring synths over samples, Abnormal is filled with sudden bursts of psychedelic melody, off-kilter audio-manipulations and bubbling acid-trip basslines. The tracks also have a subtle but distinctly Lithuanian edge, drawing influence from the iterative, morphing patterns of the folk symbols and insignia carved into the remains of ancient settlements near Vilnius.
'Syze' bounces melodic percussive riffs across an arpeggiated bassline, with synth flourishes and talking drums squeezed in between. 'Pepper' has DJ JM's trademark high-energy vocal chants and a thick, slamming bassline. The title track, 'Abnormal', is perhaps the most stripped back, building a weighty atmosphere through increasingly choppy perc stabs. 'Erazer' closes out the EP with ducking filtered pads and sliding scales through an industrial rhythm section. Each one stands as a "wtf was that?!" set highlight, a vortex of wild ideas in a club-primed package.

Axefield's music is inspired by hollow halls and large brutalistic buildings that make us feel so small. Transpersonal World guides your meditation making you feel like you’re standing in the hall of a massive industrial cathedral. Ancient Memories evokes exactly that as images from the past run through your veins. Do we feel a certain way? The synth patterns resemble steel pipes whereas the bassline sounds like large concrete slabs swiping you off your feet.

opposites attract was developed in parallel by utilizing one another's samples with the intention of having an "a" and "b" side. during the arranging process the idea of the "side" seemed to lack importance. each track seemed to complete each other rather than to establish a hierarchy. the numerical order is irrelevant.

A glimpse into a world beneath ours, an ekosystem of subterranean currents and nu-life flickering in the depths. Genesis Pool is a various artists compilation comprised of eleven droplets of underground dance futurism; shimmers of grime, trance, jungle, ghetto and uk bass present a bio-sample that captures every strand of the current UK underground.

The droplet that began the discovery of the Gen Pool; ZaaZaa (also one half of Kiara Scuro) delivers an ethereal and urth-shattering opening track that fuses a grime skeleton filled with guttural pulses and crashing claps with ZaaZaa's own angelic vocals.

"Markham Road Records is back steering steady with atch22, Count, Rizla Ops, and Teqmun in the driver seats. MR003 finds form as a quartet of percussion providing some real bang for your buck. This release was dreamt up for quick stepping activity, and the four tracks assembled provide a wide ranging toolkit to get us all moving. Although each artist provides a unique solution, movement was and remains the underlying idea behind this third release. 

“sexta feira” finds itself on the borders of trance, dembow, and dubstep. Besides these initial patterning queues, atch22 also employs a variety of vocal stabs and modulation to keep the track moving. After a recent move to build a studio in Strahov Stadium (would definitely suggest looking this one up), atch22 has been back behind the monitors, with this track being the first product of his new musical home. The track defines itself in the world of peak time frequencies and fluctuates through a wide range of feelings."
