Forest Time  
A personal practice to experience Forest Time. Sit in the forest or a stand of trees. Sit quietly and tune in with your breath, let go of your day for 30 min. 

10 deep breaths

Take a deep breath, as you breathe out, use your breath to jump you 100 years into the future. 
Notice how the plants, the trees changed around you. Perhaps, lichens are more colorful, perhaps streams are more lively.
Every time you take another deep breath you are moving forward another 100 years see how the forest is growing - some trees are getting older and some new are coming up to the light. Plants and animals appear, evolve, and come back to the forest.
Repeat to 10 deep breaths. 
Now you have moved 1,000 years! 

Observe the world around you. Observe the forest. Observe yourself, how your sense of time has shifted and how you are feeling at the moment.

Within Forest Time you can ask the forest a question, that you are holding. You can tune in with a specific issue if you are in search of a solution. Ask from the moment in the depth and perspective of Forest Time and wait for the answer to emerge. Express gratitude for the insight and when you are ready to come back to the present moment, take a few deep breaths and transport yourself back into the present.

Forest Time Meditation

Council of Seeds performances at Jardim Botanico de Lisboa took place on the 4, 10, 11 and 17 of June at the National Museum of Natural History and Scienct in Lisbon

A contemplative journey through the garden’s paths, a walk through strata of deep time, a passage across human-plant culture.

The stories the seeds can tell. Every seed carries the DNA of the future plant. But not only. As we have evolved together, all ecosystem parts are intrinsically interlinked in a complex dance. Every seed carries the memory of everything else around it, including mountains and waters, animals and other plants. Every seed brings stories connecting it to humans.

I am looking for ways to know the essence of the seed, through poetic storytelling, becoming that essence of the seed, that holds the matrix, the multidimensional memory of its continuous rebirth through time.

The new performance The Council of Seeds brings together seeds found in the Jardim Botanico de Lisboa. Telling their stories in the first person through poetry, I invite them to speak their essence.

Council of Seeds is essentially an open-ended performance and installation, inviting trees and seeds to step forward and speak. All I am here to do is to step into their world, listen deeply, reflect, learn their way, take the medicine they offer.

Although created as a site specific artwork in the Jardim Botanico de Lisboa, Council of Seeds will grow and expand, to include seeds from other gardens, parks and forests.

Ultimately it is my vision to create an actual Eternal Forest Council which would include the voice of the land, trees, waters, animals and people, as participants in the complex ecosystem, which values every voice.

Evgenia Emets Mind Matter 2016

Form of Forms is a pattern poem and a sound performance. It is geometrically arranged to be read around the lines of the 3 dimensional cube. It can be performed any way one feels like at any moment. Based on affirmation and negation, it is a play of creation and dissolution of meanings.

KIMA: ‘I AM’ is a performance for four performers and audience in three languages from the Baltic countries. Originally performed at the Baltic Art Form and presented by Analema Group, the piece proposes the participatory sound and visual performance KIMA, exploring soundings of the languages from the Baltic region through a multi-lingual poem by Evgenia Emets and a composition created in collaboration with Ben Zucker, performed by the audience and a choir. I Am

At Shiro Oni I have envisaged to create a series of sound sculptures, connected with the natural environment of Onishi. Thinking about dualities I have chosen white and black local clays. I decided to try and form the works directly on the rocks, so that the sculptures hold the memory of the structure of the rock, the imprint of the surface. Together these sound sculptures create atonal sound scape which can be recreated every time like any song in nature, easily and organically emerge in the moment.

Eternal Forest Manifesto for 1000 Sanctuaries for 1000 years across Europe and beyond. 

This poetry work has been developed during the art residency in Coruche and is a poetic expression of the vision. 

Eternal Forest Coruche is an artistic investigation and vision, commissioned by the Bienal de Coruche 2019, to be presented during the opening of Bienal on 28th and 29th of September. Eternal Forest questions our relationship with time and nature’s cycles. It is a poetic, sound and visual manifesto, as well as a site-specific poetic forest experience at Herdade dos Conselhos.

Herdade dos Conselhos is a special place with rich layers of history, ecology and biodiversity. It is a place with the potential to become an inspiration for the whole community. Walking Herdade dos Conselhos is like reading a book written in a language of humans and of the forest.

Eternal Forest Coruche proposes establishing an area of forest as an artwork and a sanctuary to benefit both humans and nature. It will be a designed, protected space with no harvesting of forest resources for at least 100 years. It will introduce ‘supportive’ species of wild grasses, herbs, flowers and trees, which will enable a regeneration of a larger biodiverse system. It will be a space designed for human enjoyment, a landmark artwork for experiencing biodiversity far into the future. Eternal Forest Coruche is a vision for a long-term site-specific artwork, which can be realised with the support of the Municipality of Coruche, the local community and partners.

The design and creation of Eternal Forest is proposed as an on-going collaborative work between artists, a scientist, a forest expert, an ecosystem restoration expert and people working on reforestation - to help understand the cycles of nature, the effect of climate change on the forest ecosystem and biodiversity. Eternal Forest also proposes involving the local community into the design process and its co-creation.

In the coming years, in agreement with Bienal de Coruche, artists can apply to create a site-specific work within the Eternal Forest Coruche and use this ongoing project as inspiration, and as a reference point linking them to nature and contributing to Eternal Forest’s artistic continuity. 

Artists will be invited to stay for a few days at a time at Herdade dos Conselhos, walk the land, connect with the cycles of night and day, observe a particular time of the year and co-create with and within the evolving Eternal Forest. Eternal Forest manifesto, the artist’s book of poetry and writing, a copy of the film, and reference materials will be kept at the Municipal Museum of Coruche for future artists’ inspiration.

Eternal Forest Coruche is intended as a model for Eternal Forest artistic interventions around Europe and throughout the world. In every location Eternal Forest can have a different artistic expression connected with the local ecological and cultural landscape always, however, preserving the vision of Eternal Forest as an artwork, a sanctuary rather than land for ‘production’.

Eternal Forest Manifesto Evgenia Emets

Evgenia Emets is an artist, a poet and a filmmaker working with forests, ecology, biodiversity and community through her visual works, poetry, installation, performance, film, artist’s books and large scale ecological artworks. 


Evgenia was born in Poltava, USSR, in 1979, has lived in Moscow and London and lives in Portugal since 2017. 


Eternal Forest ongoing multidisciplinary project marks a transition towards integration of ecological thinking into her art. Evgenia moved to Portugal in 2017, the year of some of the most destructive forest fires connected with the presence of monocultures in the country. This motivated her to explore through artistic means the roots of these issues and to start the art project Eternal Forest, which is an ongoing multidisciplinary art initiative to create forest sanctuaries across the world - biodiverse areas to be protected in perpetuity, created through art and ecology and, supported by local communities. 


The project has been exhibited across Portugal and in the UK (Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, King’s College), has been invited to participate at the Bienal de Coruche in 2019 and CI.CLO / Bienal Fotografia do Porto - Sustentar programme, invited to participate in a multidisciplinary programme Roots & Seeds (organised by Quo Artis, Ars Electronica, and others) in Barcelona in 2021. 


Her art has been exhibited in such institutions as National Gallery London, NGX, King’s College, Tate Exchange/Tate Modern, Royal College of Art, Barbican, V&A Chelsea College of Art, and many more.


Evgenia’s visual works and artist’s books are in museums (Stella Art Foundation and MOMA, Russia), libraries (National Poetry Library, London, British Library and Gulbenkian Art Library) and private collections in Russia, UK, Europe and Japan.
