Khruangbin Mix

Khruangbin are the Texas based three-piece that make psychedelic, acid jazz infused Thai funk music. Oh yes. Comprised of Laura Lee, Mark Speer and Donald Johnson, the trio have supported Bonobo across his USA tour and even had a track included in his Late Night Tales mix last year.LNT's artist label Night Time Stories subsequently signed them up, with single 'A Calf Born In Winter' released 19th May and an album in the works. Providing the soundtrack to your dreams and entering i-D's mid-week wind down session for their first ever mix, these are the psychedelic sounds of Khruangbin. Drift off.

"This is our very first mix tape. As such, we wanted to draw on original inspirations to each of us individually in the band, as well as together. In this we pull on Acid Jazz, Gospel, Brazilian Funk and Psych, Thai & Japanese Pop/Rock, "farm rock", Dub, Funk, and R&B to hopefully create a mix that is varied in style yet cohesive in feel. We hope you all enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it."

We jumped at the opportunity, embracing the theme "Heavy Mellow" to curate a unique selection that showcases the seriously sublime soundscape of Hawaii's musical palette: new age and folk from the 1980s; psych from the 1970s; hip hop from the 1990s and 2000s; funk and soul from the 1970s. Solid Steel in association with Serato (31st August) 3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way. 

Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.

There seems to be a little confusion on the distinction between 'art' and 'craft'. 
Is DJing something that almost anyone can learn to execute, relatively easily, from a technical standpoint? 
Absolutely. 
Can anyone then translate that into creating a strong emotional response among their audience, or pushing forward a culture? 
Nope. 
Some djs are tradespeople, some are craftsmen, some part-entertainer-part-jukebox and one in every two million people are artists. 
Us? We just love music.
