Red Dwarf- The Best Smegging Sci Fi Comedy This Side of Futurama

Made this as a sort of uptempo chill out piece. I found the repeating loops to be very soothing and also a good source of syncopation. Keeping it uptempo meant it was more focusing than relaxing, and that made working on it positively moreish. I completed this over a three day bank holiday weekend, I estimate it took about nine hours over the course of five sessions.

I'm quite happy with it.

Angelic Bond

This was a challenge to myself. 

The goal was to create a track entirely on the ipad, but using different instruments rather than a single contained app like Gadget or Caustic. The mix was done in Cubasis and the instruments include some items from Caustic, the iElectribe, Korg Module, iPolysix and some of Cubasis' own internal drums.

All in all happy with it, bar the initial transition and the short length. It's as good as it's going to get though and as always these projects have been about learning. And that I did.

Can't wait to hear what I'll do next. 

Fear Ascending

Performed and recorded live. A first for me. Improvised too.

Layered Korg Gadget (natural piano plus orange phaser and reverb) and the Animoog (moodmemory under the keys preset) over each other by having them both take the same midi input from an external controller. I then played the pad sounds by playing two notes on the ipad screen, and controlling their intensity with after touch. I then played the actual keys on the midi controller.

I had to limit myself to two notes for the pad, as if I risked triggering a 5th note (3 on pad, one note I just played, plus the one I played previously not releasing) then it could well rest one of the pad notes and turn it off. Of course a better player wouldn't worry about such things.

I still think of her every now and then.

Remembering You

A lot happened over the course of making this piece.
It reflects how I felt a month ago when I started recording it while stuck in my old job, the current feelings I have, and the feelings I want to have in the future.
I’m glad I feel I’ve reached a point where I reckon I can actually start expressing things in music. Of course, there is a long, long way to go yet.
This was also a way to break in my home set up now it’s finished (huzzah!) as well as proving my production ideas. They worked well, but by the end midi and audio of almost everything (and so many tracks) made the project a huge unwieldy mess to navigate, and I think Cubasis was having trouble keeping it up. Next time I think I’ll just export the midi and import it again if I need to change something. I rarely go back to change it once I’ve got it ‘right’ anyway.
I’d love to give the technicals on this one but I used a lot of stuff (including hardsynths) to make it, and some items are only really present for texture or a few bars. Still if there’s a particular sound you like then let me know and I can (hopefully) tell you where it came from. 
Finishing this one was a challenge at times. But an enjoyable one.

Been on a training course for work this last week. Used gadget to relieve the boredom of two long train journeys and a week in a hotel. Nothing special, but I think it has a nice beat.

Breaking in Logic Pro X. Still got a ways to go but I love it already.

The Smiling Man's Casino

I think I put more effort into this than I have into anything else I've ever tried to do.

Making this felt a lot like making Angelic Bond. Working like a man possessed, I just couldn't put the project down and spent hours on it every day for the last week.

A bit of a milestone for me in a few regards. 

First I learned a lot about Logic Pro X's workflow and a few good 'quality of life' tricks. I'm pretty comfortable with that DAW now and I'm starting to look more into the advanced features.

I experimented a lot with compressors and I think I'm starting to get my head around them.

I also put more effort and time into the mix. I listened to this song until I was sick of it. Then I took a break, and then I listened some more. I've learned a few techniques for placing emphasis on certain sounds while keeping the others. The trick seems to be taking things away rather than adding to them. Seemed to work here anyway.

Making this put me in a weird mood.
