Boyracer are one of those bands who just simply "got it." They understood instinctively that great modern pop needs to bring noise to the table, that the old rules don't necessarily apply, that punk was more than just a funny set of clothes and that independence means just that, in every respect. Stewie and friends blazed their unique path for over twenty years, recording like maniacs and touring anywhere a stage, a few beers and a floor to sleep on were on offer.

Their pop songs have hooks that most bands would kill for, and the 'racer would run through them in a minute flat, leaving you gasping, wondering how they could play so fast with so much melody, and how in the world they could keep coming up with new ones. Like their friends The Wedding Present they let the guitars do the talking, blending sometimes ear-shredding noise into their often delicate tunes. Boyracer have a lo-fi band's love of experimentalism, but never at the expense of the listener.

This EP was the last by the mid-90s line-up featuring Stew, Matty, Nicola and Ged. Its twelve tunes will have you jumping around your living room and pulling out all your other 'Racer records.

I hope you enjoy these sounds. The audio quality on these tracks are taken from first generation cassette and DAT tapes. I have the original reel to reel masters but the tapes probably need to be baked. As time goes on and when I am able to I will transfer the original Ampex master tapes and upload them here. 

The first four tracks were recorded in the studio in 1992 with the remaining six tracks recorded in 1991. The remaining six tracks were also recorded in a studio in preparation for the rest of the Spell 336 sessions that were held in 1992 but due to time and budget restraints the songs remained in my tape vault... 

Until now.

Original review of the Spell 336 - 2008 release: 

Partaking in the Shoegazing revival, Spell 336 weave a laid back groove made up of both acoustic and chorus-drenched strummings along with dreamy vocals. The debut album from Spell 336 is surely to become a modern shoe-gaze classic. Spell 336' essentially the same name as the band, is a somewhat dreamy/shoe-gaze sound. Their cut pop style is dressed in melodic guitars and Morrissey-esque vocals, but you won't find any constantly shifting time signatures, or any other "musical feats but this music is impressive. 

For me the tracks have an interesting atmosphere that surrounds the sound and the vocals have a haunting mysterioso to accompany. 

This is pop music for the fall, for rainy days, for cloudy skies...In general this is music to make you relax and most importantly gaze.
