Marlo is the founder of Flow Movement. She has studied dance for 30+ years, taught movement for 20+ years, and has performed in movies, commercials, and TV shows.

She holds degrees in Anthropology and Public Relations, is an international pole dance champion, and has developed several teacher trainings for pole dance and floor work.

She invites all people to move with imagination and openness and provides experiences that allow anyone to access presence and Flow.

I’ll be sitting down with her to have a broad conversation about dance, movement culture, flow, and any other topics that intrigue and inspire us.

Whether or not you’re a movement practitioner, chances are good that you’ve had to deal with injury or dysfunction at some point or another. 

These unfortunate but common events can have a lasting effect on our sense of connection to our body or movement, and the process of rebuilding that connection can be incredibly daunting for many. 

It’s our belief that on top of being an incredible tool for motor learning and personal development, play fills a crucial role in the realm of physical therapy by creating fun, positive, rewarding emotions around the recovery process. 

So we brought our good friend Jackie Wu on to the podcast to share with us how she’s been using play in her physical therapy practice to help herself and her clients recover faster and overcome some of the mental and emotional stumble blocks that come with injury and dysfunction.

Today we have Jonathan Pageau back on the podcast! If you missed our first episode with him, be sure to check that out before watching this one!

When we last spoke, my goal for the conversation was to try and see if we could bridge the gap between the symbolic, meaning-focused worldview and a rational materialist, scientific worldview. While our discussion was incredibly rich and brought a lot of value to many of the viewers who shared their responses, there was a point in the conversation where we got stuck and had to put a pin in it. 

This happened around the idea of the face in the clouds. So as I approached this next conversation, I was pretty intimidated to try to take the conversation further, but by the end of the discussion I was actually really pleased at how far this conversation went and how much more of a bridge I felt like we produced.

The first half of our chat revolves around what's happening in our culture around storytelling, and sharing our insights for applying a symbolic worldview to the stories that we’re paying attention to. 

The second half of the conversation is really about how we bridge these two epistemologies, and we start where we left off with the question of “is a face in the cloud a face in a real way?” What do we mean when we say real? And I think we do some really good work in hacking at that question and then grounding what the discussion is and where the disagreements are.

Today on the podcast we are joined by Jan Bloem.

Jan is a human movement scientist and neuroscientist who has been practicing martial arts since the age of 4. Over the last 46 years he’s trained in a wide variety of combative arts such as Judo, Karate, Pentjak Silat, and Systema. 

It’s probably no surprise to you then that he is also a renowned self defense expert and psychomotor therapist who works with law enforcement, special forces and elite level athletes.

In this conversation we’ll talk a lot about martial arts and the way that cultural influences such as theatre, sport, and even capitalism shape how they have been taught and utilized throughout recent history. 

We’ll talk about common myths and misconceptions around martial arts and the crucial importance of aliveness and opponent processing feedback for any system or athlete who has a real interest in combative applications. 

We also have an in depth conversation about our modern health crisis of sedentarism: Obesity, atrophy, incoordination, anxiety, depression, adhd and the importance of utilizing play and movement for character development and cultivating the self through gradual, deliberate exposure to challenge and risk.

Scott is an MMA Coach in Milwaukee at Primal MKE. I met him recently on a panel for Rob Gray’s Perception and Action Podcast where we talked about applying Ecological Dynamics to coaching Mixed Martial Arts, and that’s exactly what we’re going to dive deeper into today. 

It was really great to talk to someone who’s been applying the concepts and practices of ecological dynamics to their students, from beginners to combat athletes, on a daily basis. In this episode we’ll talk about the difference between an ecological approach and a more traditional approach and why we greatly prefer the former for teaching our students how to be better martial artists and general movement problem solvers.

Today on the podcast we are joined by Josh Peacock.

Josh is the host of the Combat Learning Podcast and has been deeply involved in the martial arts, both as a practitioner and an instructor, for the past two decades. 

We both met recently on Rob Gray’s Perception and Action Podcast where we had an incredibly interesting discussion on the role of ecological dynamics in martial arts and MMA training. During that chat, not only was I excited to find that he’s been actively studying and applying constraints led training to his training and that of his students, I was also really intrigued by Josh’s deeper understanding of the history behind the development and rise of certain martial practices and traditions.

So today I wanted to bring him on the show and dive deeper into these subjects. We’re going to look at how traditional martial arts pedagogy became established in Japan, Europe and China, identify the reasoning behind some of their methods, and understand how an ecological approach can be applied to vastly improve skill acquisition.

This book explores what Pirsig would call the “Metaphysics of Quality” which aligns deeply with Vervaeke’s concept of relevance realization and what so many of these thinkers are talking about in the sense of meaning. 

In this conversation we are going to dive into what Pirsig means by “Quality”; how does it align with models presented by Peterson, Vervaeke & Pageau, and when these models conflict, how do we resolve those conflictions in a way that brings us closer to understanding meaning and implementing practices that bring more meaning to our lives.

Joseph Germany, to an artistic family of writers, musicians and people working in the theater. He went through the Waldorf method of schooling, which outside of the usual subjects also puts a lot of value into crafting, music and dancing.

At 13 years old, Joseph started delving into various disciplines of physical practice. Starting with martial arts and strength training, his interests expanded to include parkour and aspects of natural movement such as tree climbing and doing most things barefoot. He also became interested in wilderness training and primitive skills, which he has been learning with Uwe Belz.

Joseph would take his passion for these physical practices and build a career around them, he has taught countless workshops and helped thousands of students deepen their knowledge and relationship to movement. 

Today he’s joining us to talk about a variety of topics, including the deep meaning that can be obtained through developing a robust ecology of practices, and how the process of building a skillful body should not only enhance your physical abilities, but your strength of character as well.

The society we live in today is the safest and most prosperous society that has ever existed on the planet. The likelihood of dying due to illness, murder, or starvation have dramatically plummeted in the last 100 years. More people are being lifted out of abject poverty now than ever before, while the everyday technologies we hold in our hands grant us the full extent of human knowledge and entertainment with just the tap of a finger.  

Yet, there’s a problem.

Anxiety, depression, PTSD, adolescent suicide, and many other mental health ailments have skyrocketed in the last decade. In this age of prosperity, humans are feeling more disconnected from themselves and their communities, more detached from the natural world, and are having incredible difficulty finding a sense of meaning in their lives.

How do humans learn to move?

Be it in sports, fitness, trade skills, performance arts or just everyday life, the process of acquiring skill in movement is something that we all must go through.

For decades now it seems like the most widely adopted method of motor learning has been to apply a reductionist mindset to skill acquisition. 

The idea is to improve our movement by practicing isolated component skills with the hopes of perfecting patterns that can then be integrated back into the bigger picture task.

For instance, if you wanted to get better at playing basketball you might individually practice free throws, three pointers, lay ups, etc… with the goal of having perfect form on every repetition.

If you want to learn parkour, you might have an instructor give you detailed explanations of each vault: how to angle your hands, where to jump from, what each foot is doing at the beginning, middle and end of the vault, where your eyes are trained, your breathing, etc…

The problem is that this approach doesn’t address the variability of context and constraint.

In a real game of basketball, no two shots will be under the same conditions, and the number of possible conditions to shoot from is far too vast to practice each individually.

Even further, this method is directly at odds with how humans actually develop motor skill because it tends to rely on the prefrontal cortex which is great for organizing propositional knowledge but ineffective for performing skillful, adaptive movement.

Perhaps you’ve experienced “paralysis by analysis”: freezing up or being unable to act as a result of trying to mentally organize and process too many individual component actions..

As it turns out, it is far more effective to gain movement skill by engaging in tasks built around complex problem solving.

It's fairly obvious if you think about it. As babies, we don’t learn to locomote because of our parents detailed instruction of contralateral crawling patterns. 

We learn to crawl because we need to solve the problem of not being able to play with that interesting thing on the other side of the room.

The process of solving that problem, and other problems like it, ingrains those movement solutions into us and before long we are solving new problems to reach things that are higher up which opens the doors to climbing and moving bipedally.

So how do we apply this process of learning to our own movement practice, or even to the practice of elite level athletes?

Well on today’s episode of the Evolve Move Play Podcast we’ve got Shawn Myszka joining us to talk about just that.

His work has centered around using ecological dynamics to improve not just how top NFL players move, but how they utilize their capacities for attention and intention to become better problem solvers on the field.

We are shaped and molded by the things that challenge us and if we're hoping to achieve a high level of skill in movement or in life, the most valuable process we can engage in is to test those skills against oppositional forces. We have to put our efforts under fire and see what works and what doesn't time and time again. If we forego that opponent processing, we lose a fundamental source of information about the quality of our practice which can set us up for catastrophic failure down the line.

While warriors are usually portrayed as being heroic, the two terms are not synonymous. While they may not be conventional warriors, are the loving mother, the healer, or the shepherd any less heroic? They face chaos and adversity not with sword and shield, but with compassion and wisdom. 

What we want to point out in this episode is that there is an archetype that embodies both the gentle and firm aspects of heroism, and striving to embody this archetype is a far more relevant and useful aim than putting all our eggs in the basket of warrior-hood.  

That archetype is the Sage.

We so often mistake pain as being just a signal of injury. When our lower back aches, or our shoulder cries out every time we put it into extension, it might make sense to assume that there’s something wrong with the joint or the connective tissue around the affected area, but that’s not always the case.

So how do you determine the true source of your chronic pain issues? It can be a difficult journey, as many of the things that cause our body the most stress are of mental and emotional origin. Things like anxiety, or past traumas, can be stored in the body and create an inflammatory response that begins to have downstream effects, one of which is chronic pain...

A big reason that we lean into the study of play so much is because it’s a profoundly powerful learning system that exists to drive us towards our most genetically relevant skills and abilities. Children climb, jump, roughhouse, throw and creatively use objects like sticks and stones because those physical abilities have been crucial for the survival of our species for an incredibly long time. 

Yet biology and evolution are incredibly complex and when it comes to human health, it can be easy to fall into the trap of reductionism. There will never be any diet or movement routine that can act as a definitive cure-all for the entire population. Even routines that work wonders for one person can be ineffective or detrimental to another person, so it’s highly important to keep an objective mindset and pay attention to nuance when looking to build a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. 

The fact that our evolutionary heritage is both highly relevant and staggeringly complex means that we should look to experts like our guest Spencer Wells to draw insights from that can help ground our understanding and make better decisions about our health as modern day humans.

The situation we're facing now, especially in the western hemisphere, is a bleak one. However, by studying treatments for other serious diseases like smallpox and looking into the unexpected turn of events in southeast Asia where Covid-19 has had nearly no effect on countries like Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, Spencer is not without hope.
