About our Evolved Nest

Children are biosocial creatures such that their biology is constructed by their social experience. The evolved nest or evolved developmental niche (EDN) is the ecological system of care provided by families, teachers and communities that aligns with the maturational schedule of the child, satiating the evolved needs of infants and children, allowing them to flourish and develop compassionate spiritualities. Childbirth is naturally timed to indicate when the child is ready to be born (sometimes exiting the womb early because of problematic development or maternal stress). 

Modern practices often interfere with nature’s timing. Humans have changed this heritage with psychological interference (e.g., anticipation of pain, causing fear and contraction of muscles instead of relaxation.  Natural oxytocin and epinephrine are released by the mother during unimpeded labor, suppressing pain, coordinating uterine contractions and supporting emotional bonding through hormone releases that facilitate memory and social reward (Lévy, Kendrick, Goode, Guevara-Guzman, Keverne, 1995).

Vaginal birth may parallel the extensive licking that other newborn mammals receive from their mothers (Montagu, 1978). Similar to mammals who go unlicked, cesarean-birthed babies have respiratory, digestive and elimination problems.  In fact, the physiological stress of natural birth triggers high levels of mitochondrial uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) which is related to nutrient utilization critical for normal development and survival of hippocampal and other brain neurons, affecting memory and other functions in adulthood (Simon-Areces, Dietrich, Hermes, Garcia-Segura, Arevalo et al., 2012).

Evolved Nest Explained: Soothing Perinatal Experience

Play is associated with regulatory behaviors such as delay of gratification and modulation of emotions, suggesting that play might positively relate to the physiological mechanisms underlying self-regulation. We hypothesized that opportunities for social free play with peers, as reported by mothers, would predict children’s autonomic regulation (via Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia) in a sample of 78 five-year-old children. As a proxy for play experience generally, frequency of social free play in the past week predicted higher levels of RSA functioning across three time points, baseline, stress, and recovery, but did not account for physiological rate of change between conditions. Social free play opportunities might positively influence children’s physiological functioning, at baseline and under stress, by supporting increased parasympathetic activation. This link deserves further exploration as children’s free play opportunities might be declining, yielding possible implications for children’s parasympathetic activation, social engagement, and prosocial behavior.

Lisa Reagan talks with Darcia Narvaez about the new Evolved Nest Baby Bill of Rights poster, available here. In 1989, world leaders made a historic commitment to the world’s children by adopting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child – an international agreement on childhood.  It’s become the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history.  However, as Darcia explains in this interview, children's basic needs are not the basic needs of babies. A Baby's Bill of Rights are really the baby's basic needs for brain, immune system, and even spiritual development (nature connection). If these basic needs aren't meet when a baby's biology expects them to be met, we are looking at a lifetime of compensating for these deficiencies as adults.

The Baby's Bill of Rights was first presented in the academic book, Basic Needs, Wellbeing, and Morality: Fulfilling Human Potential, by Darcia Narvaez in 2018. Why do we need a movie like RH?

People are immersed in images and stories about how.
Humans are naturally selfish and violent, cruel and hostile.
It’s just the way we are.
Things were so much worse in the past.
If you think the past was better, you are a romantic.
There is nothing you can do differently.
So, be competitive and get yours.
Don’t care too much about anyone else.
This is the cycle of competitive detachment.

We feel stuck. 

How do we pull ourselves away from the glue of this view? 

You need three things.

First, to change behavior, you need to have a goal, a vision of how things can be, to motivate change. RH provides this vision. Things don’t have to be the way they are, in fact they’ve hardly ever been this way.

Second, you need specific direction, that’s the Indigenous worldview and its manifestations.
We can all assess our worldview practices and move them towards kinship with one another and the rest of the natural world. Again 99% of humanity manifested the Indigenous worldview.

Third, to accomplish the vision, you need steps: the evolved nest.
We can all practice nestedness in every aspect of our lives—listening to Nature, respecting the needs of babies, gently receiving others’ perspectives, playing joyfully with one another, healing and grieving together.

The overall message of RH is that our ancestors knew how to live well and fully with diversity, in oneness. We can do so too.

About the Evolved Nest

Every animal has a nest for its young that matches up with the maturational schedule of the offspring (Gottlieb, 1997). Humans too! The Evolved Nest (or Evolved Developmental Niche; EDN) refers to the nest for young children that humans inherit from their ancestors. It's one of our adaptations, meaning that it helped our ancestors survive. Most characteristics of the evolved nest emerged with social mammals more than 30 million years ago.

Humans are distinctive in that babies are born highly immature (only 25% of adult-sized brain at full-term birth) and should be in the womb another 18 months to even resemble newborns of other species! As a result, the brain/body of a child is highly influenced by early life experience.

Multiple epigenetic effects occur in the first months and years based on the timing and type of early experience. Humanity's evolved nest was first identified by Melvin Konner (2005) as the "hunter-gatherer childhood model" and includes breastfeeding 2-5 years, nearly constant touch, responsiveness to baby's needs, multiple responsive adult caregivers, free play with multiple-aged playmates, positive social support for mom and baby.

Calling these components the Evolved Nest or Evolved Developmental Niche, Narvaez and colleagues add to the list soothing perinatal experience (before, during, after birth) and a positive, welcoming social climate.
