That waiting however is nearly over and as the ever impending Jubei  “To Have and Have Not “ Album release date grows ever nearer and in anticipation for the full L.P we   are issuing this upfront sampler of the Album to showcase two (of the many) highlights from the LP and to offer a snapshot of the forthcoming content and quality.

"Rufige 11" is a track that absolutely needs no introduction, Jubei’s gigantic take on the Godfather Goldie’s own signature style and sound created under his now infamous 'Rufige Kru' alias production guise.  It's a homage that couldn't really have been paid any better.

EARMILK Exclusive (Liar "Cybertime" Walkthrough“

Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation […] Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data.” Liar attempts to translate this definition from the very author who first coined the term, William Gibson, to a 4D vantage point. As such, he imagines not only every single point in infinite 3D space theoretically collapsed to a single point upon digitally trivializing distance, but, furthermore, the collapse of every discrete instance of said 3D space into a single, non-linear event, upon digitally trivializing time. Hence, “Cybertime”. 

Functionally, this equates to music that, seemingly, effortlessly splices DNA from digital conceptualists as Fatima Al Qadiri or Oneohtrix Point Never, from retrofuturists such as Bok Bok or Surkin, from 90’s hardcore stalwarts such a Special Request or Zomby, and from sound design heavyweights such as Amon Tobin or Noisia; all towards achieving a unified, stable construct of antique, classical, retro, contemporary and futurist sonic vocabulary.

Opener “Erumpo Ortus” is, potentially, the most cinematic of the six. With the opening sample beckoning one to “dance like there’s no tomorrow”, it’s ostensibly driven by hundred-handed tribal drumming and monolithic choral manipulations. At its basis a simple oldskool electro beat, overall it’s a rousing overture, most committed to the release’s origin- and time-defiant aesthetic.  

The title track is Liar’s most grime-leaning track since “Alpha” (although, again, barely so). The sluggish-bass-driven, instrumental grime backbone is expanded upon with junglist references, a healthy serving of rave, and a Night Slugs-indebted sound palette. As it progresses, it becomes half adult vaporware, half “Jock Jams” revivalism, and all love letter to Golden Age sci-fi.    

“Hekatonkheir” is a genre-obsolete piece of bass histrionics. Beginning with a titanic bellow that segues into cinematic orchestration, it timely explodes into dozens of distinct sounds thrashing about, nevertheless, as one single congruous beast. This volley of sound design goes through several distinct sections with operatic flair and pomp, sometimes seeming like a cut from Don Davis’ work for the The Matrix trilogy, sometimes seeming like a saccadic dream sequence, sometimes seeming like a rhythmically-subverted neurofunk banger, and frequently punctuated by ethereal vocals chanting about Iapetus, the third moon of Saturn.
On the flip, “MutaGen” divulges some of the EP’s meta-social agenda, envisioning contemporary life as the exploits of a mutant generation, passively engaged in a violent psychic insurrection against the dehumanizing vagaries of hyper-reality. It also divulges Liar’s roots in jungle and his veneration for forefather Venetian Snares, in the form of acid hyper-grime that spastically grooves beneath a surrealist score, before exploding into an amen-driven finale.   

Continuing “MutaGen”’s rhetoric, “Phalanx” is a blend of New Age samples, sounds of battle, retrofuturist trance and slow-mo footwork. Urgent, intense and unrelenting, its only brief respite is around the 2 minute mark, where it pauses for a breathtaking, uncannily-uplifting trance breakdown, before resuming the sonic siege.

“Reforestry” is a lengthy closer that pulls no punches in earning the oft-abused-these-days adjective “epic”. Alternating between martial rhythms, splintering half-time slogs and loungy downtempo swagger, it pulls from myriad palettes, yet achieves a unified effect – that of conveying a sylvan swansong. Around the sonic detritus of a forest seemingly imploding on itself, distorted drones, distant pads, diffuse choirs and, lastly, a demure piano epilogue create a swirling, gothic portrayal of unstill life, laden with the soft, sparse touch of Romanian vocals that go (if Liar is to be trusted) “It was raining infernally, and we were making love.”

This is the datamoshed Genesis and Revelations of Liar’s Infinite Machine Bible, circa MMXIV. This is the gospel of how the infinite machine operates in the great singularity cloud of cybertime. Believe.

Steve Burnett and Olly Stork, between the two of them, have amassed quite the expansive track record, toying with every conceivable form of house, techno, garage, bass music, and mélanges thereof. With last quarter’s lush 12” wax exclusive “Bespoked”, on P&S Records, the two have joined forces and debuted as powerhouse duo 2ndSun.

And in their case, the term “powerhouse” acquires a second meaning. For Tessier-Ashpool’s first catalogue entry, and first statement of its ‘machine music doctrine’, the Liverpool/Cheshire boys deliver a jackin’ house exemplar – effortlessly and elegantly futuristic, seemingly forged from disused power tools in industrial environs, yet wholly dissimilar to some of their UK peers’ facile, by-the-numbers distorted warehouse trappings. This is two masters of their craft, at the top of their game, prescribing the distant future of 4/4 UK club.

Titular track “Shimmer” is the EP’s definitive anthem. Atop an undulating reese bassline to make Saunderson proud, playful chords and an almost trancey gated pattern operate along instantly memorable dubbed-out vocal cuts. “Neglect”, “Pussycat” and “Small Talk” are crisp, crunchy, militant numbers, driven by varispeed vox atop sound design masterclass in motion - heaving, thrashing, pulsing, falling apart and being rebuilt again in real time. Closer “Metro” is the most somber of the five, with nocturnal, melancholy dub chords setting the stage for an unbridled percussive assault.

Hard to put in words even by the most articulate of music didacts - yours truly included -, “Shimmer” is easier done that said. Do it in copious amounts. Results will not vary.

Tessier-Ashpool has quickly become one of our favorite labels thanks to a concise and fresh aesthetic that melds techno with bass music in a maelstrom that's at once minimalist and heavy. Label head Liar's remix of "Adapt" is a perfect example of what the label are all about, and if you're into this, take a dive into their catalogue.

You may be familiar with Sivey from his collaborative record with Evil Needle, 'Constructive Interference', released on Soulection in summer of 2014 or you may have caught one of his uptempo, dreamy DJ sets in and around London.

The Manchester-based producer who seamlessly combines a number of varied aesthetics with his unique, moody synth progressions comes correct with the 17th installation in our White Label Series.

In a cohesive 4-part story, Sivey takes us through slow jams, house and future sounds with broken rhythm grooves reminiscent of jazz fusion.

"I chose these tracks because I felt they represent a good mixture of my influences and styles I like to experiment with” Sivey told us.

Sivey creates his moody sounds using FL Studio and enjoys the challenge of pushing the boundaries of how midi can be used to create live sounding music.

Sivey - Ascension

Following the release of their latest album ‘Rising and Falling’, the duo return with a brilliant remix package centered around one of the standout tracks from the album. Titled ‘Can’t Hurt You’ the track features the sublime vocal talents of Kim Ann Foxman.

Fans of the album will be well versed with the delicate floating synths and memorable vocals of the supremely-talented Miss Foxman from the original album version. But this release is all about the three remixes from Guti, Russ Yallop, and Just Be!

Desolat’s Argentinean supremo Guti offers his own refreshing take on the original, injecting some serious South American funk and flavour to proceedings. From the outset Guti stamps his unmistakable groove on the original taking the tempo up a level and adding new keys and vocal samples, culminating in a fantastic dance-floor orientated remix.

Next up is one of Crosstown Rebels leading lights Russ Yallop who lends his hand to create a trippy yet sensuous version of the original. His remix is characterised by striking deep bass and a jacking kick which take centre stage. The remix builds and builds into a swirling distorted crescendo until it drops back into its absorbing big-room beat.

Completing this package is a special dub by Just Be, one of Matt Bushwacka!’s aliases. It takes the listener on a much more hypnotic journey. While the subtle synths and haunting vocals of the original remain, these are complemented by adding new percussive elements to the track, taking it to new sonic depths.

Overall then fans can expect yet another strong remix package from Layo & Bushwacka! which features three extremely high-quality versions of the fantastic original.
