On 6th June the Leeds-based seven piece Submotion Orchestra present their debut album ‘Finest Hour’ on Exceptional Blue records. Bewitchingly beautiful, perfectly crafted and conveying the melancholy menace of what Marvin Gaye called ‘Inner City Blues’, this is at once classic and utterly current.

We believe that this album will stand in the pantheon of iconic British soul/bass music, alongside Massive Attack’s ‘Blue Lines’, Soul 2 Soul’s ‘Club Classics’, ‘New Forms’ by Reprazent, Goldie’s ‘Timeless’ and James Blake’s eponymous longplayer. The spot-on arrangements, instrumentation and production are adorned with the sublime vocals of Ruby Wood – reminiscent of Jill Scott, but with added heartache.

‘Finest Hour’ follows the recently released single ‘All Yours’ (also out on Exceptional Blue records). Radio support has come from Trevor Nelson and Gilles Peterson on Radio 1, the latter of whom gave the band his ultimate seal of approval - a Radio 1 Live at Maida Vale session. Additional radio support came from Mista Jam on 1xtra, plus the band bagged plays on Radio 2, NME Radio, Jazz FM and Los Angeles tastemaker station KCRW. 

Album opener ‘Angel Eyes’ sets the tone as warm, transporting sounds unfurl spaciously, before the bass not so much drops, as slides in effortlessly at just the right moment. 

The album’s first single ‘All Yours’ demonstrates what can be achieved when the basic paradigm of dubstep is modified and morphed, in this case creating a stunning love song akin to Innerzone Orchestra remixing an Anita Baker vocal, written by Terry Callier. 

With every track as high-calibre as the next, all perfectly programmed to work as a fantastic whole, the album closes with the aptly titled ‘Perfection’, which concludes things with masterful pathos. 

Submotion Orchestra have been making waves and rapidly building a reputation as one of the most intriguing ensembles to surface in the last twelve months. With a focus on live musicality and originality, their take on dubstep has won respect from cutting-edge bass bods, discerning fans of quality dance music, to soul and jazz heads.

Submotion Orchestra is the brainchild of Leeds music heavyweights Tommy Evans 
(also the drummer in Gentleman’s Dub Club) and dubstep DJ/producer, orchestral player and award winning radio presenter Dom Howard, AKA Ruckspin. The Orchestra are an ensemble of multi instrumentalists at the top of their game, who’ve played with many respected and renowned artists.

Since inception, playing live has been a key strength of the band. Formed in Leeds in 2009 the band were formed when Ruckspin and hip underground label Ranking Records were commissioned by the Arts Council to write and perform a live dubstep piece in Yorkminster Cathedral - the largest in Northern Europe. 

Rising to the challenge, Ruckspin and Tommy brought together an all-star cast from the Leeds music scene to create what would become Submotion Orchestra. This was the first time a full range dub-style sound system had been brought into a venue of this kind and was heralded as a historic event both for York and Dubstep (the mantle was later taken up by James Blake for his Union Chapel performances).

A now legendary weekly residency at the intimate Hukaz bar soon followed, and the Orchestra swiftly built a devoted following by giving the fans the opportunity to see them create new material up close and personal.

Their debut release, the ‘Finest Hour EP’, released on Ranking Records gained much organic online and DJ support with no marketing or promotion involved. It also brought them to the attention of Gilles Peterson, who instantly became a believer.

Heavy rotation on Mr Peterson’s show ensued, followed by a license for ‘Finest Hour’ on his ‘Brownswood Bubblers’ album series, (which had already featured notable talents Jamie Woon, Flying Lotus and Floating Points), plus the aforementioned Maida Vale session. High-end DJ support has come from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Oneman (Rinse) DJ Flight (Metalheadz/Rinse), Simbad (Defected), Tayo (Kiss), plus Ashley Beedle and Rocky.

The band worked their way up through a series of ever larger venues and crowds at home and nationwide, fast winning a genuine, old fashioned word-of-mouth live fan base. The gospel spread so rapidly that festivals like the Big Chill, Latitude, Outlook and Bestival soon came knocking, with the band smashing it at each one. Their 13 date UK tour in May more than proved the word is out, with their London Jazz Café show selling out three weeks in advance.

Dubmeister Planas takes time out from his duties with Gentlemens Dub Club and day to day involvement in running the highly regarded Ranking Records to deliver his first full release for exceptional blue.

Merry Go Round is dreamy swirling haze of a track full of the dubstep flourishes Planas is renowned for. Featuring the sumptuous vocals of Claudia Georgette who memorably invites you to “ climb up my stairs”. The mesmerizing Merry Go Round will be going round your head long after you’ve heard it.

Kicking off with Agbekor as his first release on Ranking Planas aka Toby Davies has already acquired a staunch following amongst the dubstep fraternity whilst his involvement with the hotly tipped Gentlemens Dub Club is spreading the word much wider still, whilst his rather special remix of Submotion Orchestra’s Finest Hour brought yet more fans into the fold.

We’ve got some excellent remixes too. Toby ioi’s genre crossing sound has already been making waves on Radio 1, 1xtra, Choice FM and Rinse Toby has worked with and alongside artists such as Sway, Estelle’ Blak Twang and Wiley and for us he delivers a spankingly bouncy mix of Merry Go Round. Dubstep don Ruckspin takes it one step deeper into dub putting his own ermmm spin on the track, which should befiled under required listening, And if that’s not enough we also have Seemore Productions, signed to DJ K.O's Elementality Productions in New Jersey, doing the honours in the remix department.

With a crisp and clear Scandinavian breath of fresh air Cloud unveils his latest three track EP ‘Voyance’. From elegant electronica to full vocal tracks to minimalism there’s very little that’s missing from Cloud’s palette of sounds, and this EP, featuring three stunning recordings, sees this masterful Swedish minimal / electronica producer effortlessly blend together techno, disco and house to make an EP that stands distinctively on its own. 

Alex Berg (aka Cloud) has enjoyed recent success working with fellow Gothenburg resident Nils Krogh under the name Genius of Time. They’ve had two acclaimed vinyl-only releases out on Aniara Recordings under the Dutch Clone Label, and one on the Clone’s Royal Oak series (with label mates including Space Dimension Controller, Reggie Dokes, Marco Bernardi and Gerd.) Juno Download said “Rarely though does anything reach out, slap you in the face and grab your attention as much as this.”

Cloud’s first album – Adventure –was an outstanding collection of deceptively simple tracks demonstrating an uncanny knack of combining great vocal tracks with a series of exquisite instrumentals. For his second album Hökarängen Space Program this Gothenberg and occasional Berlin resident shows his influences from fellow Gonkyburgers, Plej, Hird and Andreas Saag and has also been inspired by what he’s heard during his time in Berlin. The result -  cool Scandinavian electronic soundscapes with a dash of German minimalism, the occasional vocal and a nodding acquaintance with techno, disco and pop (Swedish division), come together to make an album that embodies the essence of Cloud.. like nothing else.

All of which, not surprisingly brought him a small army of devoted followers and praise from some of the bigger names further up the ladder, Tom Middleton, Jimpster and Prins Thomas being but three of them

Each of these tracks is carefully and expertly crafted, demonstrating that what is seemingly simple can be, in the right hands, devastatingly effective.

Exceptional Blue records present the sublime bass music of ‘Breathtaking’, the new single by Planas AKA Toby Davies, which is adorned with the dulcet vocal tones of Ed Thomas. It precedes the release of debut album ‘The Long Game’ later this year. 

‘Breathtaking’ contains enough musical mastery to ensure the leap from underground dancefloors to the wider music world. Toby is an original member of Gentleman’s Dub Club, for whom he writes, produces and plays bass, plus he founded the renowned club night Vagabondz, which is now part of the Outlook Festival in Croatia. He also writes hip hop as Tarqwin Smythe with Ed Thomas of Gentleman's Dub Club, and in 2009 formed producer duo Seemore Productions.

‘Pop & Lock’ is given a dubstep makeover by Blacksmif, North London’s Eclectic electronica producer, who also goes by the name Yemi Olagbaiye. He has had releases through Synchronicity Records, Hit & Hope, BlahBlahBlah and Space Hardware, remixed for the likes of Landslide and Oculus, and delivered guest mixes for long-time supporter Mary-Ann Hobbs.  With an uncanny ability to forge and meld a host of genres, melodies and instruments he looks set to attract widespread attention soon.

Marina Faib delivers a stunning electronic remix of ‘Secrets’ to complete the package. A dubstep and DnB producer, DJ and Vocalist from Moscow, Russia with releases on Ranking Records, Smoking Sessions and Redvolume, Faib has already stamped an impressive mark on the bass music scene despite her young age, carving a niche for herself amongst fans of the soulful, yearning sounds of Burial, Syknro and Quark.

Toby Davies (Planas) follows up the much acclaimed and heavily rotated Breathtaking single with his third release for Exceptional Blue label: Better Days .
 
Better Days shows Planas in full party mode. A merger of 80’s drums, lurching, distorted bass stabs and euphoric vintage rack synth chords, Better Days looks both backwards and forwards at the same time, harnessing the feel good sounds of the eighties and nineties and mashing them together with cutting edge production techniques and a mammoth slab of sub bass. Linn drum tom fills and wailing guitar lead lines punctuate this instrumental piece, which, after a goosebump-inspiring intro quickly develops into an intergalactic space funk explosion that’s like standing under a waterfall of pure sonic joy.

The main themes and motifs reoccur, evolving and weaving together with ease, showing Planas as both a master musician and master producer. Fans of Rustie, Hudson Mohawke and David Hasselhoff will definitely dig.

Bass, rhythm and soul are still paramount, but from the first few bars of ‘Intro’, with it’s Philip Glass-meets Penguin Café pianos, it’s clearly evident that the band have broadened their musical palate. It’s also also clear they’ve made this expansion sound effortlessly captivating – ready to melt minds and bassbins alike.

“In making ‘Fragments’, we started to stretch out from the template of the first album”, explains keyboardist Taz Modi. “There’s a lot more colour and moods on this record; strings, woodwind and various new synth textures. We followed our noses to see where they’d lead us. There should be enough here to satisfy fans of ‘Finest Hour’, but hopefully there’ll be quite a bit to surprise them as well…”

‘Blind Spot’ maintains the lush, expansive sound that made the band’s name and adds subtle new flourishes. It takes what was already a sweepingly cinematic blueprint and goes one step bigger and better. With a gauzy synth weaved throughout the mix, you get the feint suggestion of chillwave being on the band’s tourbus playlist.

‘Thinking’ perfectly captures an uplifting summer sunshine, currently missing from our shores. Gnarly bass purrs underneath tight and crisp rhythms, with Ruby Wood’s honeyed vocals poured liberally on top. By ‘Bird Of Prey’ things take a turn down a strange and eerie vista; heavy drama meets the cosmic and cerebral, with a hint of Herbie Hancock-style electronic jazz funk.

Wigged-out live favourite ‘Times Strange’ features the album’s only guest vocal, courtesy of Rider Shafique, whose limber lyrics ride over a warped, 50s Sci Fi analogue tone. The darkly psychedelic, growling-bass-opus ‘Thousand Yard Stare’ epitomizes the album’s psych-electronic side, whilst maintaining fully firing live drums, strings and brass.

‘Fragments’ ends on the reflective note of ‘Coming Up For Air’, with perhaps the least anticipated addition to the mix; its waves of distorted, electronic dissonance are redolent of more low-fi and laptop-based dance music.

On date London/Leeds-based seven piece Submotion Orchestra return with Thinking - the third single taken from their critically acclaimed second album Fragments.

Thinking kicks off with easy-going yet somehow frenetic high hat, all tight beats and ghost hits, imploring the foot to tap. This effortlessly cool and funky electronic track combines well-placed synths and live drums with Ruby Wood’s soulful vocals, cleverly chopped and produced, combined with close harmony backing vocals calling and echoing the refrain ‘I’ve been thinking ‘bout you’. Remixes come from Uggs & Barbour and Mark Knight.

Uggs and Barbour have created a remix which somehow defies classification. Safe to say this mystery mix is worthy of further investigation and will not disappoint. 

Remix number two comes from Grammy nominated artist, Mark Knight, who is responsible for some of the biggest dance records of the last decade. His signature sound blurs the boundaries between mainstream and underground and has propelled his revered imprint, Toolroom Records, to world domination. As a producer, Mark has built a reputation for outstanding releases, consistently topping international dance charts with timeless anthems; You Got The Love (Mark Knight remix), Man With The Red Face, Downpipe, Conscindo, Good Times, Devil Walking, Alright… the list is endless. As a DJ, Mark holds international prominence, with his ‘Toolroom Knights’ residencies regularly hosted at Space-Ibiza, Ministry Of Sound-London, Cocoon-Frankfurt, Club Space-Miami, and at key festivals including SW4 London, Global Gathering UK and Dance Valley Netherlands.

Here’s a brief re-cap of the recent Submotion phenomena; Having captivated revellers with their frenetic live dubstep spectacle, the band became firm festival favourites, wowing crowds at Glastonbury, Bestival The Big Chill, Latitude, Secret Garden and Outlook in Croatia.

Last year the band released their debut album Finest Hour, plus singles All Yours and Always. They were met with widespread critical acclaim, plus heavy Radio 1, 6music, 1xtra and NME Radio support. The release of their sophomore album Fragments has helped them achieve more mainstream appeal, whilst still satisfying their die-hard followers. Fragments moves coherently between styles, marking a broader palate of influences seeping into their output.

Fragments received a huge amount of support at press, including a brilliant Mixmag feature, and positive coverage in quality titles DJ, Q, The Telegraph, Artrocker, Aesthetica, Trap and Hi Fi News. There has been great interest online recently with glowing pieces running on SBTV, Drowned In Sound, UKF, FACT, Fake DIY, Artrocker, Data Transmission, Soul Culture,  Beatwolf, Potholes In My Blog and countless more, as well as extensive regional press coverage.

Highlighting their broad appeal, DJ support has come a diverse selection of jocks including  Laurent Garnier, Oneman (Rinse), DJ Flight (Metalheadz/Rinse), Simbad (Defected), Tayo (Kiss), plus Ashley Beedle and Rocky.

Submotion Orchestra have toured the UK and Europe extensively usually selling out venues and delivering triumphant performances which see fans returning time and time again to watch them.
