2016 was a standout year for Alan Fitzpatrick, with the Drumcode stalwart racing out of the gates in spectacular fashion with the release of his fabric 87 mix. A substantial amount of high profile shows followed, including appearing at the inaugural Junction 2 festival and closing the car park to a packed-to-the-rafters-crowd at Drumcode Halloween. He returns to Drumcode with ‘Brian’s Proper Dun One’, marking his first appearance on the label since late 2016 when he remixed Moby’s seminal ‘Porcelain’.

The release opens with ‘Brian’s Proper Dun One’, a track which caused a Twitter meltdown on Alan’s profile when he first started playing it at the tail end of 2016. Loaded with sharp and pounding drums, this is an ethereal experience from start to finish and packs a real punch. It’s a no holds barred, certified main room anthem. ‘Wait A Second’ feat. mc r1bbz has been a staple of Adam Beyer’s sets of late and has been getting a lot of air time on Drumcode Radio. This rave inspired track takes a raw, stripped back approach and delivers a real killer blow. Alan sampled the vocals of mc r1bbz from an LTJ Bukem tape pack from the early 90s and the record tips its cap to early jungle raves around the M25. The release closes with ‘Trance, Init?’; A homage to Alan’s days first and foremost as a raver before he became a DJ, with his non-purist attitude when it comes to electronic music shining through. The breakdown is sure to be a hands in the air moment at festivals all over the globe this summer.

We Are The Brave front man Alan Fitzpatrick provides the labels next release with a typically incendiary two-tracker. Delving deep into his record collection for inspiration, the result is a brace of distinct, ear-catching cuts that tip a hat to by-gone times in rave culture and have returned big reactions from contemporary crowds all summer. 

The aptly titled “They All Called ‘Em Garys” combines droning hardcore hoovers and power piano with Fitzpatrick’s trademark heavy tech funk. While “Rhino” adopts a slung-back groove of resounding bass and tense pads overlaid with a knockout melody that bubbles away before unleashing its full chord progression through an unashamedly epic breakdown.

1. Why did you choose to become an artist?
 
“I first discovered going to raves and parties when I was around 16-18 and I always remember being amazed and Intrigued about how electronic music is made and played out live. I got my first copy of Reason 3 over 10 years ago and started teaching myself how to make music, it started out as a hobby but over the years the idea of becoming a professional artist became more serious to the point where it has become my main focus and passion.”
 
2. What do you do to get into a creative state?
 
“I like to go to the gym usually in the morning, normally it clears my mind and I find exercise in general releases endorphins which helps calm your brain before doing anything creative. When It comes to writing music I normally spend the first couple of hours just exploring sample packs, playing with software or hardware synths, drum machines etc. Sometimes this process can be quick and I find myself in a creative state almost straight away, sometimes it takes a long time until that creative burst strikes. Once it does I have to capitalize on it. Apparently separating Lego blocks into different color piles helps too (I saw that on a documentary once but can’t say I’ve ever tried it haha) Regular breaks and plenty of caffeine always helps too!”
 
3. Where do you get your inspiration from?
 
“Everywhere really, I mainly listen to Electronic music and will always find little sounds or elements in tracks that inspire me and there’s a lot of great artists out there that inspire me in general. However, I also get inspiration from movies, games, nature, science documentaries about cosmology etc. Even if I’m not inspired musically, I can appreciate different forms of art and sometimes I can translate that into a different form through music.”
 
4. What, for you, is the purpose of art?
 
“To express emotion, personality and meaning through one artistic form or another.”
 
5. What do you want to express with your music?
 
“I always try my best to create original music that’s true to me. I sometimes like to make dark, weird sounds that people haven’t heard before which always draws your attention from generic music. I often like to express emotion in my tracks as I think it’s important to be able to feel something when listening to music. The combination of driving techno with a lot of energy mixed with captivating melody’s and big basslines seems to do it for me!”
 
6. In which ways could the scene improve in the future?
 
“Well there isn’t a huge techno scene from where I am from in Manchester but it is starting to change, hopefully there will be more people attending techno events in the near future. In terms of the global scene, I think less politics with labels and artists would be nice to see. Music is about bringing people together at the end of the day, sometimes big egos can get in the way and make other people feel inferior which isn’t cool.”
 
7. What do you love most about being an artist?
 
“I really love producing music and always have. I like to think of myself as a pretty versatile artist with a fairly wide range to my sound. This is the way I can fully express myself without creative limitations. There’s also no better feeling than dropping one of your own tracks at a gig and seeing the crowd go crazy for it!”
 
8. Most profound insight you had since you started this career?
 
“I think I found that when you try and make tracks fit for a certain label, you are instantly limiting yourself creatively. I would say my biggest insight is to just make tracks and worry about labels later.”
 
9. Most exciting club moment?
 
“Probably headlining Watergate for Stil Vor Talent doing a 2 and a half hour peak time set to a packed out club until the sun came up, was a very proud moment!”

Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Brave imprint continues to blossom into one of the most prominent labels in the industry today, as the latest release sees the founder link up with Grammy Award Winning duo CamelPhat on a pair of massive techno tracks via the 'Kona' EP. Here Mixmag reveals the premiere of the EP's title track, a euphoric and anthemic peak-time techno cut packed with relentless energy. 

Alan Fitzpatrick had this to say on the new collaboration: “It’s always exciting for me to work with new artists and people that I think can bring a different take on things in the studio. As individual artists our styles are fairly different, and that always sparks some magic in the studio. This time round it was techno magic, in the form of 'Kona' and 'Liberation'"

The 'Kona' EP is set for release April 19.

Pleasurekraft return to Drumcode on remix duties after a 2 year hiatus with all engines on the Cosmic Techno ship firing.  Big-room atmospheric drums and an infectious call and response hook intertwine with Green Velvet's otherworldly vocals to produce a new highly visceral and steroid injected version of the original.  The "Space Date" remix marks the sixth collaboration between the seminal purveyors of the Cosmic Techno sub-genre, Pleasurekraft, and Chicago's iconic dance music pioneer Green Velvet. 

The remix initially came about after Drumcode head Adam Beyer heard Pleasurekraft's "Welcome to the Universe" EP [Kraftek] at the end of 2018.  A huge supporter of the Swedish/American production duo, Adam felt so inspired by the whole EP, especially "Main Sequence" that the opportunity for Pleasurekraft to take their love of all things space related lent itself naturally to the thematic elements in Green Velvet's vocals. 

The track's spine is built around a hypnotic groove that is anchored to a single word from the original's vocals : "ecstasy" and slowly builds to the first climax of the record where the listener finally hears Green Velvet's vocals in full for the first time.  However it isn't until the second break of the track that the power of the remix is finally unsheathed, resetting the groove and building up to a second swell featuring a duo of call and response melodies between the lead hook and a lower end bass that takes the intensity of the track up another notch - ultimately culminating in complete silence that gives way to the remix's original heartbeat and repeating mantra: "ecstasy". 

Taking over a month of studio time to complete, it was road tested for the first time at Pleasurekraft's Fabric London gig, where there was no shortage of inquiries as to the ID of the record.  This soon became a repeating theme after Adam Beyer first included it on DCR446 and played it during both of his Ultra Miami (Resistance) sets, including his closing b2b set with Maceo Plex who loved the track so much he proceeded to get his own copy and play it during his own solo set one week later at Time Warp in Germany.  

Multiple clips of the remix have already gone viral on various social media and blog outlets, with no shortage of fans waiting anxiously for the June 24 release date on Adam Beyer's own Drumcode Records. In Adam Beyer's own words, Pleasurekraft are "setting new standards" with their continued foray into the Cosmic Techno sub-genre they continue to define.
