Seventeen is about wanting to be recognized as an autonomous person as a minor. Julia was sick of being censored. The song is like a diary spelling out her distaste for a lot of hypocrisy and belittlement that she was experiencing as a junior in high school. Julia's message resonated as legendary engineer Chris Lord Alge agreed to re-mix the song after hearing the demo.
