Artist Statement: 
In 1961, jazz baroness Nica de Koenigwarter began to ask musicians she encountered in New York clubs to name three wishes. J. J. Johnson had one: “ To be able to play exactly what I have in my mind.” Other answers include “peace on earth and them other planets” (Wayne Shorter), “all the Steinways” (Sonny Clarke), and “money, money, money!” (Philly Joe Jones) ...but J.J.’s stood out the most. I live for a musical relationship where creation and groove inspires me. Groove is everything. Groove is something that is rewarding on a spiritual level, a primal level, an intellectual level, and a physical level. It’s something you feel. Something I always want to feel.

So here’s my tribute to the mighty mighty one, Mr Maurice White, who sadly passed away on February 4 of this year. He left us an incredible treasure trove of music that has shaped the way I live my life!

I avoided the really obvious hits that you can hear everywhere and went for my personal faves, and a solid dose of the music that went on to shape the unique sound of Earth Wind and Fire from his early years working with two great mentors to him, Ramsey Lewis and Charles Stepney.

I got so much pleasure recording this - I hope you enjoy as much as I did!
