My opening set in the Utah desert in September at Bourbonman 7, The All Hail Nature Edition. It was an extremely cathartic three-hour meandering through some of the more experimental/broken beat/minimal/psychedelic/ambient techno type tunes in my collection.

Was such a pleasure playing this (relatively) chill set at The Great Beyond, July 29, 2023.  My first time playing during the day felt different and we did not run the stage this year so we were booked in a 4 hour block Saturday called "The Headspace Collective". We split it evenly- Neil played first, Brandi next and then me. They did a great job of keeping it chill. I, as usual, couldn't keep it slow but worked it up for the perfect set up to JayceeLives playing disco, boogie and house. 
Thanks to Cloudy Kid and Kajungaworld for the audio support, Neil Fox for the all around support and of course Intellephunk for throwing an awesome event

Following in the wake of other like-minded East Coast producers like Levon Vincent, Anthony Parasole and Fred P, Joey Anderson is the latest offering in a fresh load of artists hailing from New York. Like his predecessors the American reached a wider audience at a relatively late age, and also like those before him, Anderson can do a lot with very little. The art of omission is mastered by this techno stalwart, who quickly became a Dekmantel family member by both performing at our events and releasing an impressive album on Dekmantel Records.

This 12th instalment to the Dekmantel podcast series sees a beautifully build up mix. As Joey proofed at his Panoramabar set in March, he warms up a crowd like no other. This mix starts of with some deeper tracks, examplarery for the New York sound Joey represents. Towards the end the podcast becomes more techno and features “1974” from his latest EP on the Dekmantel label.

On with the techno mixes, and here's one very dear to my heart. 

Leaving aside S'Express and Technotronic, the first electronica I got into was via the likes of 808 State and Orbital, Sheffeld bleep n' bass, R&S and a bit of Tresor, so I largely missed out on the Detroit scene at the time (circa '90-'92). My critical entry point into falling in love with stateside techno was Plastikman, and once again I need to give thanks to Richard t/e/u/(@user-778760538) and his superb mixtapes, which are largely responsible for this. 
(I've just taken a few off my shelf to reminisce... scanning through a couple there's selections including Wagon Christ, Autechre, Luke Slater, A Guy Called Gerald, AFX, Blake Baxter, Sweet Exorcist, Sabres Of Paradise... lots of awesome stuff. I'd rip these if my walkman wasn't knackered. Maybe they could be future mix tracklists? I digress). 

Through these cassettes Richie Hawtin's minimal - yet spacious, lush, and at times concrete-hard sound was the first to really catch my ear, and Sheet One remains one of my most-cherished albums to this day. Here's a selection of his work mainly under the Plastikman and F.U.S.E. monikers, plus a couple others... yeah, strictly speaking I should have called this the Richie Hawtin mix but Plastikman sounds cooler, doesn't it.

EPM Podcast 128 comes from Detroit Techno royalty and godfather of ‘Techno Soul’ - Eddie Fowlkes. With a huge musical catalogue and DJ legacy spanning upwards of 30 years its safe to say that Mr. Fowlkes brings plenty of knowledge to the party. With a mix that weaves strands of electro, house and techno into a flowing groove we find Norm Talley rubbing shoulders with DJ Skull, Jeff Mills going toe-to-toe with Delano Smith and Mike Huckaby (RIP) getting his jit on with John Dixon. For a first in our podcast series, Eddie did a vinyl set filmed live from his house on lockdown  - with daughter Tia introducing the mix. It’s a family affair! Eddie Fowlkes is the history of Detroit Techno and not just because his handprints are cemented on the Detroit Historical Museum’s “Legends Plaza”. His 30+ years of moving a dancefloor and his 150+ deep catalogue of Techno soul classics speak for themselves. From DJing in the early 80s with three turntables, a mixer, wah-wah pedal and 808 & 909 drum machines his 1986 release ‘Goodbye Kiss’ on Metroplex Records, helped to define what would become known as Detroit Techno.

In the 90s, Eddie termed his distinct sound: Techno Soul, bringing together Detroit techno, 70s funk, the Motown sound, Parliament and Chicago house and his DJ sets further reflect his productions that are ‘an evolution in one track’, from house to techno and back again. With releases on Metroplex, Tresor (as 3MB with Thomas Fehlmann & Moritz von Oswald / Maurizio), 430 West, SSR, Azuli, Third Ear Recordings and Infonet he continues to create, to push boundaries, and to release music on his two imprints City Boy Records and the vinyl only, Detroit Wax Records.

With last years collaborations with Jeff Mills, the album ‘D-Town Playazs’ with Loco Dice and this year’s re-release of the City Boy Music archive, Eddie Fowlkes is firing on all cylinders. And here’s another reason…
Eddie Fowlkes ‘Knuckle Head Series Vol.1’ (City Boy Music) is out now. ‘Knuckle Head Series Vol.2’ follows 22 May and ‘Volume 3’ in July.
