Following a session on experimental turntablism and modifying records, students played their creations in sequence as a whole group performance.

The background to it is that it's from a tape of a session I had with a "psychic" way back when I believed in that sort of thing. I guess it explores the idea of influence and naivety - "giving" your self to someone and letting them have control over how you see yourself.

The first half is built around two tape loops made in class: the phrase "there's no better way..." originally played backwards on the tape and I had to reverse it in Audacity to reveal its message; I like the sentiment! The distorted mellotron sound is another tape loop with huge amounts of reverb(s) added. The rest of the piece is interspersed with field recordings made in and out of class (apart from the rain sound which is Graham's). It closes with a loop of a guitar chord played through an iPad app called Flux:Fx over treated field recordings.

I titled this piece as I thought it offered a sound world suggestive of sinking, losing focus, and feeling adrift – a becoming unfamiliarity.  A metaphorical play upon the idea of one’s memories as an open sea wrought with danger; sometimes lacking a port of call; and suggestive of continents yet to be reached – “Full fathom five my father lies/Of his bones are coral made.”
