Berlin-based, Franco-German producer and DJ Franz Matthews, alongside well-known happiness coach Jonathan Lehmann, have crafted a thumping, hypnotic EP that combines music and the practice of guided meditation as one.

We’ve collated remixes from a spread of some of the greatest minds in electronic music today, including Aera, The Organism and Milio, to create their unique interpretations of this pioneering project of mind and music.

Franz Matthews’s original brings a complex web of interlocking percussion rhythms that develop with unfolding synths throughout the guided meditation to reach a soul-shaking climax. Transporting us on a journey through the mind with a captivating piece of musical storytelling throughout.

Aera steps up with the first remix, carving out a spacious story that casts the spotlight onto the spoken word vocals from Lehman, combining elegant rhythms with contrasting layers of subtle harmonic movement and mind-altering synth melodies that engage the inner recesses of the brain.

The Organism takes things into a more aggressive, percussive direction, using his archetypal sound to traverse across the planes of your mind. Off-kilter synth tones collide across a punchy Moog style bassline and grooving disco-tinged drum machine grooves underneath.

Finally, Milio brings his distinctive club sounds to the blend. Mixing glitching rhythms with wandering melody lines that integrate elements of minimalism and techno into a joyous and playful reworking. Milio’s distinct ability to craft memorable lines that are equally unique and quirky closes this superb remix package off with finesse.

Franz Matthews - The Question (feat. Jonathan Lehmann) [Aera Remix]

'Veluw,' which was written in a cabin in De Veluwe, a vast forest in the Netherlands which had a clear impact on the sounds. Streams of lush melody, harmonic bell sounds and subtle clicks all unfold in loose yet elegant fashion up top and slowly but surely lock you in a trance. Sweeping strings add scale and bring plenty of positive emotions.

Reminiscent of a Wild Bunch record but produced by Two Lone Swordsmen somewhere in the 22nd century, the stark sleazy beats give heaps of space for Cormac’s provocative vocals. Eagles & Butterflies meanwhile gives ‘A Perfect Time’ the consummate dancefloor treatment. The main mix packs a wry but euphoric Italo punch that shimmers and wriggles around the vocal. The rave mix, meanwhile, kicks with more electroid angularities, eventually melting into brazen trippiness.

Budakids’ ‘Walkman’ single gets the remix treatment.
Dutch duo Tunnelvisions strip things back with monotone bass allowing the glorious synth elements to take centre stage. A more direct approach ensures that the energy never slips, aside from a deep, almost hypnotic bassline. 
Bufi lays on shaking tambourines, massive swathes of reverb and looping synth elements to increase the tension and drama at first. Then comes a warped, buzzing, electro-style riff, which trades places with a sorrowful, low-key arpeggio. Darker than the original, it provides a stark contrast to its optimistic sound and is made for more intense moments.

Having released the acclaimed ​Be Mine on Crosstown Rebels in 2017, Berlin-based Siopis lands on Rebellion with ​Unconditional​, a poignant two-tracker that features the vocals of esteemed DnB lyricist, MC Coppa.

“An interview with Lauryn Hill inspired me to make this release. It blew me away and I felt it straight in my heart, so I wanted to share the deep message that comes from it. I put her vocals into the break of the lead track, and Unconditionalwasborn.”S​iopis​.

Beginning with the ethereal sounds of ​Unconditional​, the lead track is a journey into electronic music’s spiritual realm, as supple keys vibrate alongside a gently moving bassline. A sample from Lauryn Hill’s iconic speech acts as the breakdown, before the emotive bassline comes back in to pull deeply on our heartstrings. ​Kaleidoscope feat. MC Coppa ​completes the release. A prolific producer, ​Siopis ​has been carving out a career in electronic music for more than a decade. Previously known under his Silversurfer moniker, he is responsible for some of Crosstown Rebels’ earliest releases, producing 2004’s ​Parisis ​and collaborating with Kiki on the seminal ​Shake Off that same year. Fast-forward to more recent times where continued releases on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels and M.A.N.D.Y’s Get Physical Music have helped define his emotional, dance-oriented sound, whilst frequent performances at clubbing institutions such as Hoppetosse and Golden Gate have established him as a regular on the Berlin circuit. With international sets under his belt at the likes of Miami’s Ocean’s Ten and Mexico’s Americana Club Social, the future continues to shine bright for Siopis.
