Two very classy tracks here from Montenegro’s Buba, fusing all manner of pretty and potent sounds into a heady mix.

‘Back To Life’ is a light-on-its-feet blend of Italo and melodic techno, where peppy percussion bounces alongside a rubbery bassline and ethereal, muted chords which slowly build a melancholic vibe. A fizzy square wave pulse hammers out a gently uplifting melody over the top, pushing towards the blissful breakdown where each element soars skywards. A gorgeous track to build the mood early in the night.

‘Arza’ could be categorised as Italo trance, with super tight beats and a sensual bass arpeggio fluttering away gently as sustained, filtered pads swell from the depths. The percussion builds, and a gorgeous chime melody softens into focus, also filtered in a dreamy, hazy, lo-fi manner. Big tom fills announce the arrangement switches, and gently phasing detuned chords provide the icing on the cake for this spine-tingling track. Subtle yet deeply emotional, these two gems suggest that Buba has a very bright future ahead.

Hailing from Odessa in Ukraine, Komilev found a new home in Spain amidst the war in his home country, and fortunately he’s been able to return to making the excellent music that has seen him release on Disco Halal, Watergate Records and Frau Blau. He debuts here on Exploited Club with two haunting, sophisticated gems.

Delicate piano chords draw us into the graceful ‘Supreme’, which builds so very effortlessly. The pitter-patter of nagging synth line buzzes around cowbell and snare hits and detuned pads which soar dizzyingly in the distance. From the breakdown comes a breakbeat section which lets the dreamy elements of this track really spread their wings, before a pleasingly cheap sounding synth-guitar arpeggio bursts into life, sprinkling some euphoric energy into the proceedings. Delayed notes provide the icing on the cake.

‘Cuseni’ channels ‘80s synth-pop energy, a sparse broken beat rhythm peppered with Linn drum snares creating a haunting feel which is bolstered by the juicy walking bassline and shimmering electric organ stabs. A succinct but highly effective lead line follows the bassline’s progression, before we delve into a pitch-bending organ breakdown. Next comes a bold plucked synth riff that Depeche Mode would be proud of which sends the track well and truly into orbit.

Australia-based duo Lunar Disco land on Crosstown Rebels with new single ‘Devil’s Hands’, remixed by house heavyweights Luciano and Anthony Middleton.

Comprised of DJ and composer Nicolas Blistene and his singer-songwriter partner Kate Elsworth, Lunar Disco rose through the Parisian house scene but are now based in Australia, producing music that fuses live vocals and rich electronic textures. They veer towards the deeper, more sensual and playful end of the spectrum, while Kate has also been in hot demand as a vocalist by the likes of Deep Dish and labels such as Mobilee. Building on releases via Blond:ish’s Abracadabra Music, Kindisch and their own Suck My Disco imprint, late July welcomes a debut appearance on Crosstown Rebels for the release of their latest single, ‘Devil’s Hands’.

‘Devil’s Hand’ is a low-slung and sleazy take on indie disco. The bass is rough, with wild guitar riffs adding an extra layer next to the swinging, macho disco drums, while Kate’s steamy vocal brings inviting human soul as psyched-out guitars add a spaghetti western-style energy. The track then comes as a ‘Dirty Club Mix’ by Lunar Disco and Rebellion signee TAYA., opting for a rubbery groove for the back room, with moody bass and electronic pulses taking it deep into the night. 

Swiss-Chilean minimal maestro, long-time cult underground hero, and Cadenza boss Luciano heads up the B-side as he draws on his Latin heritage to cook up intricate percussive grooves across his remix to lock in listeners. His drums are rolling but heavy, and the claps and hits are layered carefully into an infectious tangle that never lets up. As both one half of Audiofly and on his own, final remixer Anthony Middleton has been at the heart of the house scene for many years, featuring as a vital presence in Ibiza each summer. His remix is sparse, with cosmic synths sequences unfolding over elastic drums and bass. It’s subtle but emotionally intense, and will make for a perfect late-night trip.

Next up on Rebellion is jozif with his Reclaim The Light EP , delivering four original dancefloor cuts. Since his debut release back in 2008, the British producer has gained support from the industry’s most respected tastemakers with his impeccable arrangements.

" This EP is one I'm probably most proud of because it encapsulates all these different sides of me and how I write my music. Reclaim the Light is a love song I wrote whilst trying to save a relationship; Billions I wrote after being in the jungle listening to Luciano and Dixon. I Know You (Love me) is a record I’ve been trying to write for about 10 years - delicate, classy, subtle. Picaro, I wrote in about twenty five minutes on my Father’s kitchen table after watching a Jeff Porcaro documentary ”

The opening track, Reclaim The Light, is a vocal-led, house track complete with seamless percussion and melody. Billions No Trumpets follows suit, an entirely new ethnic feel, with chanting vocals and wooden percussion. Complete with chimes and delicate piano, I Know You (love me) enchants throughout before dropping into a solid kick snare. Finally, 80’s-esque synths and a raucous drumbeat conclude the EP in Picaro.

Following a whirlwind of standout releases with the likes of Wolf + Lamb, Mobilee and Ministry of Sound back in 2010, jozif has cemented himself as a unique musical voice in the world of electronic music. His impressive and versatile mixing skills have taken him across the globe and led to his release kicking off the infamous Balance series in 2013. The London-based artist is currently putting the final touches to his album and accompanying live show.
