Two hot remixes of O.N.O. electro-pop smash ‘Gran Music’? Yes please.

Running Back artist Enzo Elia does away with the light touches of the original in favour of something moodier and more atmospheric. Rugged electro dissonance abounds in the bass synth, which chugs away menacingly beneath light snares and driving hi-hat and ride patterns. The breathy vocals take on a different character in this darker context, creating a trippy feel with their hazy tones. Sustained pads build the mood towards the break as the bass synth unfurls its gnarly teeth. Rasping textures and incessant percussive hits fire up the breakdown, leading to crescendo of bleeping arpeggios that hark back to progressive house in its heyday. Throw in some tense stabs and intense, distorted pulses and you’ve got yourself an all-encompassing riot of sound.

Man-of-the-moment Captain Mustache lays his Parisian touch down on the second mix, opting for throbbing analog bass thrusts and ticking old skool percussion, before unleashing a fizzing lead arpeggio and breakbeat pattern that gives the track an entirely new dimension. Old skool electro with modern pop sensibility, it’s a killer rework that’s sensitive to the charms of the original while adding an element of beefiness to the proceedings.

Support for French duo O.N.O. has come from the likes of Chloe, Jennifer Cardini, Terr and Lauren Laverne from BBC 6 Music as well as fashion publication Numero Mag. They’ve been enjoying their own residency in Paris, and have plenty more tasty music waiting in the wings.

Captain Mustache is at the vanguard of Paris’ electro new school. Riding on a wave of incredible form, he counts to his name a collaboration with Daft Punk-affiliate Play Paul on KOMPAKT to his name, a collab with Chicks On Speed on Permanent Vacation, an EP for Helena Hauff’s Return To Disorder label, an album on Bedrock and an outing on Les Yeux Orange with remixes from electro gods DMX Krew and Legowelt. Defining his sound as ‘romantic and burlesque’, he takes his cues from electroclash, ‘80s electro and synth pop and Detroit techno.

Classic drum sounds form the crux of ‘Monkey Brains’, a hypnotic tom rhythm throbbing away amidst punchy claps and crisp claps. A buzzing synth bores a tunnel through the centre of the groove as Ulysses’ twisted vocal stylings enter the fray and echoing stutters permeate the depths of the track. Subtle arpeggios add colour as bright lead blasts cut through the mix. Each element is carefully positioned and utilised efficiently, the track building slowly to a beautiful intensity before stripping right back down again. And so it goes back and forth, undulating between rapture and darkly-tinged introspection.

Previously enlisting the likes of Adamski, Dave Clarke, Paris The Black Fu, The Advent and Keith Tucker to provide vocals on his tracks, Captain Mustache finds perfect company in New York’s Ulysses. Part of Neurotic Drum Band with John Selway, he has previously released acclaimed output on Prins Thomas’ label Internasjonal. Bearfunk, Lasergun, Guidance Recordings and Throne Of Blood.

Made up of husband and wife duo Australian singer/songwriter Kate Elsworth and French DJ/producer Nicolas Blistene, Lunar Disco has appeared on the likes of Defected and Kindisch. The charismatic and glamorous pair recently launched their 1980s inspired Suck My Disco imprint, with the first release, ‘It’s About Time’, landing in late 2021, and follow-up ‘Telephone Rose’ picking up heavy support from BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong.
Now dropping their latest single, ‘Sex, Drugs, Money and Lies’, Lunar Disco recruit Berlin’s Nicone and Morocco’s Amine K for a pair of remixes alongside the original. Leading the release, the ‘Original Mix’ sees lush synth licks, subtle basslines, and reverberated vocals together for a funky, groove-led excursion. DANTZE label-head Nicone delivers the first remix, reaching for pumping drums and blissful pads, followed by Amine K’s smooth interpretation, making full use of soft, swinging percussion and dubbed-out chords.

Summer heat is here and with it the eighth installment of Duro’s international groove compilation "Muy Duro". For this volumen the Mexican record label dig music from Lithuania's Monk Ernie, a seductive collaboration between Time To Sleep & Local Suicide. The first manifestation from Israeli, Ido Morali. The debut of Moisees & ZEA in the VA series, and to close the compilation, a collaboration from TAU’s duo, Dominik Marz & Radial Gaze.
The opener is "Canned Shoes" by Monk Ernie, a fresh and vigorous cut with a rogue percussion section, a big funky bass line, a melting electric guitar, wacky arpeggio synthesizers and cooling pads. It’s followed by "I Unfollow", the collaboration between the Croatian Time To Sleep and Berlin based lovely duo, Local Suicide. Seductive melodies, tight drums and phantasmagoric voices lead you through the whole track. From Israel comes Ido Morali with "Mondo3000", a pushing bass kick blended with dozed vocoders and acid sound that sweeps the reality expansion into a hypnotic experience.
Next up is "Wasen" by Moisees and ZEA, a track inspired by DMT trips and Japanese fishing boats. A Strong and mind-blowing cut, oriental instruments, psychedelic synthesizers, and rumble drums drive you to the zurna's break. To close the compilation is "Error 707" by Dominik Marz & Radial Gaze, an epic cut manufactured with powerful drums and beautiful synthesizers, an electric shocks rain.

Beyond The Struttosphere return to Gouranga in full force, two years following the release of their lauded debut EP, New Frontier. The title track of Astral Riders imagines the two cosmonauts burning through the atmosphere to a soundtrack of chugging metallic guitar stabs, syncopated arpeggiators and celestial 808 hits, coupled with an extraterrestrial vocal sample from the 1969 cult biker film, Easy Rider. The track builds in momentum, before propelling into cloud nine with a fully tranced-out crescendo. Remix duties are provided by two maestros of the scene: Mexican dark wave legend Rigopolar applies his signature formula to the original, stripping it back to its core components, and bolstering it with cosmic synths, driving motorik percussion and a Donna Summer style bassline that ramps up the groove. Israeli house aficionado Juvë delivers a second remix that draws on elements of deep house and comes loaded with distorted FX, ethereal pads and reverberating low-end synths that culminate in a spectacular drop. 
The second offering, Canyon Grit, is as gnarly and raw as its name suggests: this is full throttle dancefloor banger, commanded by a dynamic resonant chug bassline, reinforced with cutting snares, driving hi-hats, reverbed guitar loops, and Hendrix-inspired psychedelic 303 sequences that will leave you gasping for air. The original is backed by a stellar remix from Tiempo De Maldad, another Mexican stalwart, whose take cruises through hyperspace in unfaltering abandon, with kinetic drum workouts and spacey synths that navigate the tune to its tripped-out conclusion. 
The final track, Set Lasers To Stun, comes laden with intoxicating solo guitar recorded live on a vintage Stratocaster, deployed with euphoric Rhodes piano, galactic laser zaps, twanging new wave guitar chords, and the BTS trademark chug bassline. The EP closes with a remix from Rebolledo, head honcho of Burning Man’s Mayan Warrior and one half of the legendary Pachanga Boys. His contribution remodels the track into a dark and hypnotic desert trip, with dusty FX and dreamlike melodic pads that will no doubt teleport dancefloors into the stratosphere.

French alt-pop talent Theodora is still riding high off the success of her Too Much For One Heart album from last year. It saw her distill her love of cold electronic sounds, r&b and contemporary hip hop with her knack for catchy pop hooks and warmly human lyrics. She has done the same on various EPs since debuting in 2016 and is known for telling evocative personal stories.

Theodora heard the original 'Twist In My Sobriety' on a cassette compiled by her aunt of her favourite songs from her teenage years. It struck a chord with her so she now revisits the melancholic hit with gusto, taking the delicate melody into danceable territory as she whispers the lyrics over a newly relentless beat. The tune has been mixed by Etienne Caylou and intertwines dance, new wave and techno in a style that is Theodora's own. Her voice is the centrepiece, arousing emotion and a furious desire to move. The tune comes with a video by SuperFeat, who has been a visual collaborator on all of Theodora's latest releases.

Giving Theodora's tune an even more club-like feel, British producer and musician David Shaw and the Beat adds his own remix. It is a pulsating dark disco cut with chugging drums and snappy hits. The arpeggiated synth keeps you locked while more dazzling cosmic chords bring colour next to Theodora's intimate and alluring vocal.
