Sun Runner is the new alias of Ric McClelland. You may know him better as Scope, South West Seven or more recently Montel. He’s had formidable releases on many taste-making labels in the past such as Kolour LTD, Toy Tonics and Let’s Play House, all of which are staples we closely follow and communicate with on a regular basis. It was a no brainer then, that we would premiere Sun Runner’s debut.

Coming out on Seven Music next week, a label run by Ric himself, the release is simply named after the two tracks, “It’s You Girl/My Walkman”. It’s the formal relaunch of the label after almost a 3 year hiatus. The 42nd release follows two recent compilations featuring the best of the label over the years, with artists such as COEO, Giovanni D’Amico, Replika and others such as Ric appearing under his various aliases.

The reason for various aliases is usually to champion a certain sound under each different moniker. Sun Runner focuses on the Disco/House tip. Our premiere today is “My Walkman”. The loopy disco number employs a familiar formula, sampling a disco record and giving it a personal touch with added elements, re-arrangement and a bit of filtering. The beauty in the music is perhaps not the originality but the ability to rediscover samples either familiar or new and blend them into a new track that’s meant to get your feet moving. Sun Runner does this well in a market oversaturated with artists trying to do similar things, albeit less successfully.

The other track on the release is no slouch either, a bit more focused on the peak time dancefloor with its thumping drums, looped vocal and its feeling of continuous rising. A release that doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t, it’s functional and should see plenty of club use. You can pre-order your copy from Traxsource.

Young Irish-producer Rebūke continues his rapid ascent to the top with two original productions on Hot Creations, primed and ready for the dancefloor.

Rebūke recalls being worried that Along Came Polly may have been perceived as being “a bit too weird”, but once it caught the attention of Jamie Jones, there was no stopping it. He says that the hype surrounding this EP “is something I’ve never experienced before...and it always get a great reaction”.

On Along Came Polly, Rebūke showcases his innate ability to craft a weirdly, wonderful slice of techno. On the B-side, Rolo is a much housier affair, weaving together a bouncier bassline and sultry vocal stab.

The alias of Reuben Keeney, Rebūke, has only been in business for a short while, but his efforts have already proved to be fruitful. He has garnered support from the likes of Nic Fanciulli and released on labels including Saved and DFTD, as well as having a successful club night under his belt, where highly regarded names such as Camelphat, Darius Syrossian, Ejeca and Huxley have all played.

Making moves on Cassy’s club-steady record label is New York-based DJ and producer Tommy Bones, with him bringing in renowned US vocalist and regular collaborator Lydia Rhodes who’s known for a string of seminal club anthems through the ‘90s and early ‘00s.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Tommy Bones’ fixation on house music and dancing
would pull him to the heady lights of New York in the early ‘90s. Rubbing shoulders
with living legends Lil’ Louie Vega, Kenny Dope and David Morales, and hitting
hallowed institutions Limelight, Sound Factory and Tunnel, he’d thrive in his environment. DJing led to producing in the 2000s, with his tracks landing on coveted labels Nervous Records, Dopewax, Strictly Rhythm, Defected and King Street. After over 20 years in the industry his passion continues to burn brightly, whether that be
through his productions, behind the DJ booth or via his now renowned weekly DJ broadcasts, 4-4 Sessions.

“I’ve had a go-to stash of Tommy’s tracks in my collection for years. His productions are vitalising, packed with energy and they absolutely lift a crowd. I actually met him at ADE last year while I was playing one of his tracks and hadn’t realised he was in

His two-track dispatch kicks off with engrossing title track featuring Lydia Rhodes, and we cut straight to the heat, with Bones’ blistering bassline and Rhodes laying it on thick with feverish vocals. ‘Acid Rain’ steams in second, relentless and uplifting,
with all horns blazing.

Phonk D lands on Exploited with a takeover of their Black Jukebox series. Serving up 4 killer dancefloor cuts, he’s got the weapons you need for the months ahead. 
The supremely funky ‘Work Dance’ makes great use of dramatic horn blasts as off-beat bass pumps and stomps all over the place. Twanging guitars licks accentuate the groove further. Chunky drum fills punctuate the rhythms and tumbling congas keep things rolling as vocal cuts command you to ‘dance!’ 
Head directly to ‘Facelift’ for some glorious strings, cascading romantically over snappy ‘90s house vibe beats. Undulating bass perfectly complements these cute motifs, making for a track that falls somewhere between ‘sorrowful’ and ‘triumphant’ on the mood board. Throw in some glistening harp scales and you’ve got yourself a winner. 
‘Never Walked Away’ is a tense stomper that focuses around a filtering soul vocal loop with some sustained strings cooked into it. The shuffling beats and relentless bass are supporting by detuned piano chords, increasing the hypnotically looping feel. 
‘Get Ready’ teases with more warped piano before unleashing a loose funk b-line and dubby vocal snippets. Sweet guitar licks weave around the slinky bassline, this understated track making a deep and balmy finale for this great EP.

Like every end of the year we present the new volume of our Rebirth Essentials collection (which has reached number seventeenth) including our best releases of the last 12 months and some unreleased tracks.

We are very happy to see Corrado Bucci again on Rebirth, the young talented producer from Brescia, who recently released on important labels such as Compost Records, Wonderwheel Recordings, Local Talk and BBE Recordings. ‘Ma'Ashan' is a song inspired by his last trip to China, which prompted Corrado to explore within himself and to express his deepest feelings in music. Israel Vich and Ramon Perez-Prieto aka SoDPM debut on Rebirth with 'Lunático'. A new sonic exploration, a unique mix of multi-cultural sounds, mystical melodies and emotive vocals.
The argentine producers at the head of PAAX Tulum, debut on Rebirth with ‘Slow When You Dance’, a track inspired during a long trip through Spain, where they saw different landscapes and experienced tense and beautiful moments that reflect the different musical tones in the track.  Released in 2016 on the vinyl only Rebirth 100th release, 'The Pyramids' by Shield and Robytek is  a collaboration with Isabelle Antena, French singer and songwriter and founding member of electro-samba pioneers Antena. Northern Irish born, Glasgow based musician, Sad City gives us a great remix working the magic with his Subtle deep ambient style.
The italian duo based in London Chromatic Filters  evolve their sound by exploring new musical territories. Their first album captures love of experiments in house, funk and disco and includes two remixes from an highly regarded artist in the Italian underground scene: Don Carlos.
Coming from Reykjavik and living in Glasgow, ILO is back on Rebirth with ‘Piano Piano’,  a taster of his first album, planned for a release in 2021. A sublime piano suite with a contemporary dancefloor swing. Expect great things from this artist
Born in France and living in Italy Camelia is a young talented artist. After the debut this year on Rebirth she is part of this collection with ‘Crowd Love’ showing her old school roots taking you on a journey on her  deep music vision: soft pads, minimal percussions, sublte effects and sub bass that keep you moving. Boris Dlugosch & Cassara are responsible of a stellar rework of ‘Over’ of the jazz-rock fusion's greatest drummer Billy Cobham. An irresistible groove with a funky disco energy that was big in the box of djs like Purple Disco Machine, Danny Krivit and François Kevorkian.
Produced with the contribution of the legendary disco innovators Daniele Baldelli and Marco Dionigi, 'Bad Reputation' by Psycho Radio & LC Anderson is remixed by the Tel Aviv duo Red Axes: A guitar-driven acidic banger combining their post-punk and new-wave influences with a dose of psychedelia.
The Italian producer Morris T returns after many years on Rebirth with ‘Fragile’, a track that builds on an Afro rhythm with a modern electronic sound, catapulting us directly onto the dancefloor.
Hammered by Pete Tong on BBC Radio1 and loved by djs like Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, John Digweed, Adriatique and Guy Gerber, ‘Numero 5’ by the italian dj and producer Gianluca Pegoiani was surely one of the underground tracks of 2020: an anthemic instrumental track blurring the lines between techno and soul, unpredictable and passionate.  
Mike Atom’s mysterious project immediately attracted our attention. ‘Strike’ is a down beat number that recalls the old atmosphere of Primal Scream and the dub sound of English raves. A voice that shouts the need for a revolution and change in our ecosystem. Blue Mondays, the project of Alex Ferrazzi and Keemani, is back with ‘L’Argine’, an experimental slow song that makes us travel with the mind, an introspective journey that then opens up to the whole world. And to close the selection Oxia delivers a special reprise version of Agoria's classic ‘For One Hour’ feat. Scalde. Atmospheric and emotional , timeless and melancholic !
