"You can get deeply lost in the darkness if you let yourself merge with it and not fight it.” With this statement, Denise Rabe vividly encapsulates her musical philosophy. As this episode of DYSTOPIA exhibits, her sound is less a musical form than a collection of sounds generating a tense, haunting atmosphere. Rabe's methods and ideas show with total clarity how darkness, what our society incorrectly perceives as negative, is in fact an opening onto a radically liberated world of abstract forces. In this episode I seek to define the meaning of darkness in techno and Denise also shares her thoughts with us about Berghain, the role of gender within the techno scene, how her personal philosophy is expressed through her music, as well as the fortuitous synergy between her name and the spirit of her music. Portuguese DJ and producer Lewis Fautzi has steadily risen from the quiet town of Barcelos to the forefront of the global techno scene. His trajectory has been nothing short of interstellar; launching with early releases on Portugal’s Soniculture, and quickly becoming a fixture on genre-defining labels like Soma, PoleGroup, Figure, Warm Up, and his own Faut Section.

His debut album The Gare Album, named after the Porto club that helped shape his artistic vision, was a bold opening statement: raw, precise, and deeply personal. A year later, Space Exploration pushed further; revealing his appetite for ambient experimentation. 

Across his discography and throughout his DJ sets, Fautzi blends dense atmospheres with magnetic, machine-like rhythms; building a sound that feels as mechanical as it is alive.

 A true craftsman of deep space sonics, he channels the gravity of the cosmos into #254: tense, immersive and unrelenting. This is Lewis Fautzi at full force.

Bulgarian-born, Oslo-based talent Kameliia’s sound leaves little room for misunderstanding. It’s ghostly, powerful and mesmerising stuff that leans on a wealth of inspiration from peers and the likes of Burial’s shadowy UK dubstep. Having studied music for four years, the production of sounds comes naturally, and on the dancefloor she’s given the space to test those personal and unreleased experiments in situ; that feedback is part of the process. Her sets too follow a formula, and a narrative thread that builds from more sparsely populated compositions to maximal, high-intensity techno, a vertical trip of the purest calibre. The threatening and world-shaking sounds she’s come to be known for have coalesced into a number of well-received productions, and made her a solid collaborator for names such as Amotik, Rødhåd and Setaoc Mass; it would be hard to imagine better company for the work she’s doing. Her cavernous and highly spiritual sound is soaked in gritty textures and characterized by a generous dosing of formidable bass, enough to get blood-flowing and her calendar packed with names like Berghain, Fold, Fuse and essaim. The Lady Machine is back for another round of Podcast fun for Bassiani Podcast 266. Born in Rio, based in Berlin, Camila Milieme developed an ear for techno at a young age, attending Brazil’s Galaktika parties and picking up tracks from radio show Novas Tendencias before landing her first gig at the fresh age of 21, and at the famed Bunker 94 in São Paulo no less. Following studies in music production in the UK, she eventually landed in Berlin and channeled everything into a dual career as DJ/producer. Her vinyl sets were, are, contagious and brimming with rapid-fire basslines, relying heavily on the type of techno à la Detroit that has been so foundational to the genre without aging a day. These ones she’s published on Mote Evolver, half of Unterwegs with musicmate Decka and resident at free-spirited Berlin party series Pornceptual. A successful crowd-DJ alliance is no easy task, but twenty years of experience have sharpened her instinct for sound and the people she’s playing it to. Driving techno that lurches along on a razor edge, slamming rhythms that vibrate through the body, the magical and unquantifiable substance that allows the very best raves to coalesce. Whatever it is she has it in spades and this latest instalment proves it. This recent number’s a cut from her live set at Bassiani in mid April; rampant grooves and low-end layers picked, welded together and distorted by this singular Brazilian talent, and mastered by @neptunemastering. The Lady Machine’s chopped-up beats are a techno purist’s dream, this newest arrival makes it reality.
