The pastel sheen of the film feels like immediate nostalgia for a TV show that had just left the air, but the plotting feels more like a pulp novel than either visual medium. Baldwin and Ward play up the black comedy and cynicism of the material, while Jennifer Jason Leigh's empathetic heroine feels more like the work of producer Jonathan Demme.
