Kevin Over further cements his status as mobilee’s most exciting fresh talent with a blistering collection of unheard material, deftly showcasing the work of a young artist rapidly reaching critical mass. 
 
You don’t come to find yourself at the helm of one of the most successful underground house and techno imprints without a keen eye for fresh talent, that which has the potential to be nurtured, moulded and pushed to the next level. Anja Schneider has worked hard to hone that skill over the years, fine-tuning her instinctive, risk-taking persona; as a result, she just knows when someone is worth investing in. With that said, she new has her new protégé Kevin Over locked firmly in her sights – and with good reason.
 
But even so, for Over to find himself behind the wheel of one of mobilee’s annual long-form releases, despite him barely being over a quarter of a century old (not to mention having only met its founder in person less than a year ago), is quite something. But then again, Anja Schneider isn’t your usual A&R, and Kevin Over isn’t your usual ‘talent’ - as if his recent stellar run of EPs on Truesoul, Nofitstate, Avotre and of course mobilee in the last year alone, didn’t tell you already.
 
Part compilation, and part album, Over was keen to emphasize how this was his first musically extensive project which followed a defined musical structure, and was consistent in its vibe and mood from beginning to end; “I felt like I needed more of a defined direction at this point in my career, as many of my EPs had traversed a wide variety of styles. The whole process took around three months, drawing from my early influences in garage and Chicago house as well as older funk stuff. I definitely got lost down the Youtube rabbit hole whilst looking for things to sample! I’m also so proud of having some of my favorite artists such as Marquis Hawkes, Jacob Korn and Soulphiction on board for remixes as well.”

As a result, the package displays a remarkably well-rounded cohesion, despite many of the tracks being wildly disparate in a musical sense. They all contain that trademark Over sound that’s hard to put your finger on, be it the piston-driven, jacking drums, the use of dirt and distortion as a textural tool, or the understated yet catchy melodies. The gloriously gravelly deep house of ‘Vember’ contrasts beautifully against the woozy, euphoria of ‘Look At Me Sartre’. There’s everything from disco-inflected bangers (‘Pfeffi Care’) to bittersweet, nostalgic house making an appearance (‘Hillside Av.’), rounding off with his haunting take on Rodriguez Jr.’s 2012 anthem ‘Satellite’
 
As is tradition with the ‘Back to Back’ series, the full package will also be accompanied by a ‘best of’ mobilee tracks from the previous year, with tracks from Audiofly, Ray Opkara, Rodriguez Jr. amongst many others, and of course Anja Schneider herself. Kevin’s series of original tracks and remixes will be available to buy as a 2 x 12” gatefold package. A tour is also scheduled to follow.

The Belfast based DJ & producer, Garry McCartney, otherwise known as EJECA, has been steadily and consistently building his sound and profile over time, through a series of impressive releases for Aus Music, Unknown To The Unknown, W&O Street Tracks, BPitch Control and Last Night On Earth, amongst others.  

‘The Crystal Maze’ EP is EJECA’s latest offering for Richy Ahmed’s Four Thirty Two label, and comes backed with a rave rollicking Special Request remix.

EJECA carves out an energetic slab of audacious party house on ‘Unloving’, resplendent with rolling beats and stabby chords, and topped off with dramatic strings and vocal chops.  Paul Woolford dons his Special Request guise for the remix; skippy breakbeats, spinbacks, plenty of horns and a thunderous bottom end that is sure to devastate any speaker stack when this one drops!

Elsewhere on the EP, EJECA unleashes some 303 bassline action and dark vocals on ‘Standard Acid House Track’, which thankfully rises well above anything standard!  And on ‘Crystal Maze’, EJECA harks back to the darker dance energies that were a staple of the late 1980s UK acid house boom.  Wrapping up the EP, ‘ISWHATIS’ gets ever so slightly twisted with an orbiting synth hook and weighty stabs over a spirited rhythm section.

Rydim is a mystery. Well, partly… One thing that isn’t a mystery is the high level of acid house authenticity at play here. Dark, heads-down strobe light seduction with the focus squared firmly on the soul of the dance. 

‘FOMO’ lives up to its name thanks to some ominous reese craft. Purring savagely throughout the track, leaving space for the sinewy 303s to dance wildly, it sucks you right in and spits you back out into the lasers at speed. Miss it, miss out. 

Don’t miss either Johannes Albert’s remix or the Bass Tool either; the former maintains the acid but re-shapes the bass into a warmer vibe while the latter strips everything back to that growing, heated bassline. Both will leave everyone in the house happy… 

Finally we have ‘Fairlight’. A homage to the mother of all samplers? That’s another mystery to solve. But we do know it’s another beauty from Ridym; naked beats and bass with crucial pads woven in for optimum breath-takes, every rush any dancer has ever felt since the 80s is saluted and celebrated right here. Rydim is a dancer…

Undoubtedly one of the brightest and passionate talents to emerge in the last decade in electronic music, Maya Jane Coles eschews the fanfare and fuss of modern-day dance heroes, and simply puts her music and DJing craft centre stage.  And under her CAYAM alias, Maya has been brewing techno leaning tracks for some time, releasing on Hypercolour back in 2014, and now a sumptuous EP for Dense & Pika’s Kneaded Pains imprint.

Minimal, shape shifting sounds comprise lead track ‘Pleasure’, impelled with urgent, rumbling bottom end, whilst ‘Jmpng’ filters a bouncing piano loop over some cut up vocals and a playful arrangement.  ‘Seratonin’ signs things off in effusive style, as synth tones bend and warp around its robust rhythm for a mechanical and angular nugget.
