Researchers at UCL and Moorfields Eye Hospital have identified biomarkers in the blood that
can predict the rate of vision loss in glaucoma patients despite conventional treatment. They
found that patients with lower mitochondrial function, measured by oxygen use in white
blood cells and NAD levels, experience faster vision loss. This discovery could enable
clinicians to identify patients at higher risk and provide them with more intensive monitoring
and treatment. The research also opens possibilities for new treatments, particularly a
clinical trial investigating the use of high-dose vitamin B3 to boost mitochondrial function
and potentially slow vision loss.
