Myke Bogan + The Last Artful, Dodgr + Neill Von Tally = Rare Treat

Showcasing the super-melodic talents of vocalists Myke Bogan and The Last Artful, Dodgr, “Mornin Dew” is a blissful and mesmerizing new track seemingly made for lazy weekend mornings. It’s also one of the standout cuts from their collaborative and fittingly titled EP, Rare Treat, produced entirely by fellow Portlandian, Neill Von Tally.

It’s Tally who sets the tone here, with his spaced-out backdrop slinking and grooving beneath his creative partners’ voices. It almost sounds as if his instrumental is moving in reverse, which only adds to the blunted nature of “Mornin Dew.” 

Even in its perpetual haze, the track hits you instantly and lodges itself into your brain through Bogan and Dodgr’s talents in the booth. And that goes for whether you can relate to his slick rhymes and wordplay like, “She said, ‘You showin’ yo’ ass’/ Well, help me pull my pants up”; or you’re just singing along to her infectious croon of “Wake up in the mornin’ dew-ooo-ooo!” Whatever the case, it’ll definitely leave you wondering what the hell the rest of Rare Treat sounds like (spoiler alert: it’s crazy good).

“Mornin Dew” can now be streamed through either SoundCloud and AudioMack, while the trio’s EP, Rare Treat, is now available for stream and download through all major digital retailers.

“Pop!” itself is a blunted, trippy musical experiment from the Portland-based trio of Rare Treat (vocalists Myke Bogan and The Last Artful, Dodgr, and producer Neill Von Tally), so it’s only fitting that the song’s new video is just as left-field and dynamic.

The effects-laden “Pop!” video is directed by Tim Slew of Soundlapse, who’s previously worked with both Bogan and Dodgr in addition to other notable Northwestern artists. And with “Pop!”, Slew clearly used the smoked-out source material as his inspiration, and it makes for a colorful, psychedelic viewing experience.

Dodgr and Bogan take center stage here, commanding the entire listening and viewing experience. Of course, Tally’s earwormy production is the blueprint for “Pop!” and it’s the perfect canvas for his collaborators to flex their vocal gifts. That’s particularly true of Dodgr, whose hook is so infectious you’ll be singing it for the rest of the day. That goes for the remainder of their ‘Rare Treat’ project, which is one of the more refreshing and unique rap projects to drop this summer.

"Today I’m super excited to premiere the latest release from The Last Artful, Dodgr, Jelly Hunt! The LA native caught my attention with an earlier release titled Squadron, on which she captivated me with her versatile and addictive sound.

The track was crafted by super producer, Neill Von Tally, a resident of Portland based label, EYRST, who The Last Artful, Dodgr joined forces with this year. The song is a fictional take on events from Dodgr’s childhood, “The song follows my brother and I on a car ride through LA that eventually goes awry.” Von Tally speaks on how the song was created, “The recording process included taking field recordings in LA as well as in Portland. We really tried to tell the story with every sound in the song as well as her lyrics.”

"Portland stand up. Last night Aminé went on Fallon and delivered a beautiful, powerful performance of "Caroline," and he had some more Portland artists with him on backup vocals. One of those artists was The Last Artful, Dodgr, who has her own announcement to make today with "Oofda."

The song [Oofda] is the first single from The Last Artful, Dodgr and producer Neill Von Tally's upcoming album Bone Music, out in early 2017. We already knew the L.A.-born, Portland-based artist could spit, and we heard hints of her melodic delivery on songs like "Squadron" and "Jelly Hunt," but here she sings throughout in her raw, raspy, unmistakable voice.

Bone Music is both sonically and thematically cohesive, with a central narrative of a blue collar worker struggling through both work and a traditional relationship.
