In this recording I perform a 25 minute live set on Basement State (3/5/2021).  I am using the Elektron Digitakt (master clock/pattern master), Digitone, and the Octatrack MK2 as my mixer, fx box, and external remixer.

This was my live performance for Basement State on 6/4/21. I built a template for the Octatrack that was a mix of live resampling/fx-box and a typical drum machine. The music is very cheerful, someone in chat said the music was an "anti-depressant." I played with Red Means Recording, Project 32, and Herr Shield. Amazing performances all around. This is the first of five sample packs that will, when finished, include every preset from the Sequential Prophet-5. This project taught me a lot about creating sample packs, how to optimize my workflow for best results, and what programs to use to build the library and chains. My goal was to create high-quality instruments to be used on my Octatrack, Digitakt II, and M8 Tracker and I think I succeeded at this.

I began with my Prophet-5 Rev 4 plugged into my SSL Big Six mixer. I used Sample Robot 6 Pro to do the actual sampling and organization of samples. I sampled a minimum of four octaves of C notes from the first Group on the Prophet-5. That's 40 presets of sounds and a minimum of four samples per sound. Choosing a NOTE length and RELEASE time for each sample is an art unto itself, as no patches truly shared the same playability, so each recording had to be adjusted manually. After I collected and refined each sample, I then batch processed them in RX-10 Audio Editor for normalization.

The last step was creating sample chains, which is honestly the whole reason I did this project. I used a web app called Digichain to make the actual quantized chains. Sample chains allow you to essentially treat SLICES as multi-samples. Samplers with SLICE capabilities include the Octatrack, Digitakt, M8 Tracker, Polyend Tracker, Akai MPC, Maschine +, etc.

Sample Chains Instructions:

Digitakt 1/2: Load sample into Grid Machine. Set slice grid to 4. Use slices 1-4 as octaves, do not set slice to NOTE. Lock in notes on trig page or use the keyboard.

Octatrack: Load sample into a STATIC or FLEX machine slot. Turn slice on. Open audio editor and make a slice grid of 4 slices. In the SRC page use slices as octaves. Lock in semi-tones via the PITCH control or live record in CHROMATIC mode with the keyboard.

Dirtywave M8 Tracker: Load sample into a sample instrument. Go to sample editor. Make a slice grid of 4 slices. Leave slice turned off and use the SLI command 0-3 to change octaves. Enter notes normally.

For all samplers with slicing: Load the sample chain into your instrument and set the slice amount to 4. Slices become your octave switch, giving you much greater audio fidelity when playing notes.
