A MESSAGE TO CHICAGO BY JAMIL INKWELL (2015)

Message to Chicago,

My name is JAMIL INKWELL, I’m 20 years old and I’m from the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. My whole life I’ve experienced violence in the Black community. But since 2012, I’ve been experiencing a deadly era in Chicago mostly involving the youth and gang culture. Chicago has a total of 2,630 people that have been shot and 441 homicides in 2015 alone (as of November 11th, 2015). Approximately 77% of the homicide victims in 2015 have been Black (342 victims). The value of a black life is at an all-time low in the eyes of our own people. We’re failing to see this is what the oppressor wants, a genocide. Being young and Black I am by nature a threat to White America. Being young and Black in Chicago I am a threat to Chicago Police Department. I’ve never experienced a time in my life where CPD didn’t view me as a criminal. 
To the young Black people involved in gangs in Chicago, I too am a product of the same cycle. I’ve lost a lot of family to gang violence, it’s still a recurring problem in my life. 
TO THE YOUTH I ASK, WHERE IS IT GOING TO GET US? WHAT ABOUT OUR FUTURE? It doesn’t matter what wrong you’ve done, it’s never too late to right your wrongs. It’s never too late to change your life, your mindset, your outlook on life, your world. So why not now? America is counting on else to kill each other until we can no longer reproduce as a race. But deaths aren’t the only thing holding us back, crime is another hindrance. There are approximately 745,000 black men in jail or prison in the U.S. That’s more prisoners the rest of the world put together. Why become a number? I have a question for Black men, who will protect the women that you love?  I have another question, are you aware of the Police killing Black people, and if so,
how does it make you feel? We are targeting the wrong people, we cannot continue to kill each other. It’s a war on us that is surely becoming more and more clear each day, from the police across the nation murdering unarmed Black people to the White Supremacist groups threatening us, and yet we still are at war with ourselves. My stance is: if you want to fight, FIGHT with a cause, FIGHT with a purpose, FIGHT for something worth fighting for, DEFEND those that need help. It’s a real enemy outside! And it’s not your brother! To some people, I might sound like a radical but understand I’m smart enough to grasp the idea that ’peace is too simple.’   I cannot ask for peace from those who hold the amount of anger towards the world that my people do, I’ll have to teach peace once we’re in a calmer state of living. We have a lot of work to do but I’m not afraid of work, I’m not afraid to LEAD. I want my city to come together in unity. I ALSO DEMAND LIBERATION in AMERICA, so if this is a problem: I AM PROBLEM, I WILL BE A PROBLEM! Whether I have to be on the front-line of defense or using my words to fight, I WILL FIGHT!
I’m about Love, Peace, Freedom, Truth, And Justice, and I will protect my people. So if you are ready to come together and fight for our lives, I’m reaching out to you.
I’m calling on all Black gang members in Chicago, the NOI, the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the BLA, and anybody who wants to stand up for US.
We have to rise above the madness between our own people, we have to unify. And I’m starting with Chicago.
