It's been quiet over here for a while, and I finally dusted off my decks after the big move to the 808 State. Here's a thick slab of dark-and-dirty, achey-breaky bass music featuring a bunch of the amazing tracks I've been cherrypicking during my hiatus. 

I'm skipping #BurningMan this year, but I hope this will be a great packing/driving/mutant vehicle soundtrack for ya. Keep the dream alive!

Tropical Edibles

My opening set from Bee Dance at Hawaiian Sanctuary on 09.02.22. I hadn't played for a Puna crowd before, so I took advantage of the fact that multi-genre sets are the norm here -- I filled several different crates with the express intent of test-driving different vibes to see what resonated. This opening set followed an hour-long sound healing session, so I focused on a gradual awakening of the senses and energy level.

Leapin' lepus! Here's my set from that bunny jam out in the jungle. My timeslot happened to follow the most intense downpour of the weekend, so I let the rain wash away all of my previous plans and pulled out the carrot-tinged special sauce to get folks out of their rabbit holes and onto the dancefloor. 

A lot of classics in here that I've been wanting to play for this crowd to see if they resonated, and the consensus was "YES!" :D Grimy house and booty breaks - two great tastes that everybunny could agree on. Enjoy!

Hop To It!

Sometimes everything comes together in one perfect moment: the vibe is right, the crowd is lit, and you're ready for anything. This mix is a tribute to one of those moments for me. 
I was fortunate enough to attend unSCruz this year (Santa Cruz's official regional burn) and even moreso to have been invited to spin at multiple events. My favorite, though, was my set at @ali-bar-bar on Friday night of the event. They had been trying to get me to come play for years, and the stars finally aligned for me to make it happen. I arrived to a packed and jumping dancefloor under the spell of the talented Miss (soon to be Mrs.!) @hijinxtrax, and needed to keep the vibe high and tight. I *LOVE* getting to play all-out, no-holds-barred energetic tracks for the pure dopamine surge it gives me, but there's a time and a place for those, and that's not always the case. Thankfully, Ali Bar-Bar has a fun "no headliners!" policy that encourages DJs to go hard anytime. I took the bait.

What happened next was peak-moment magic for me. Sadly, I didn't record the set, but I had a tracklist, and this is a studio do-over for your own personal get-down sessions. As Stefan would say with a /mostly/ straight face, "This high-energy mix has EVERYything. Funky tech house, grimy bass house, remixes, bootlegs, familiar hooks, and even a Linkin Park track that slaps (thanks to a kickass re-rub by Malaa)." 

I'm dedicating this track to new friends Marco and Stephanie, the sweetest new newlyweds that welcomed me with open arms into their amazing bar and DJ booth. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did (re)playing it!

I had the incredible honor to play for an amazing and welcoming group of individuals at the 9th annual Frolic Campout. This was my first time in attendance, and it proved to be a magical experience that *far* exceeded all of my expectations.

This set was designed around what "frolicking" meant to me. It opened up the Saturday night festivities, winding from a low simmer to a rolling boil. Funky and bouncy and everything in between. Enjoy!

This, my first set I've ever played on the playa, is the one I've been wanting to play for as long as I can remember. I've got 30 years of love for electronic music dating back to the days of acid house, but it was TTITD that introduced me to dirty, funky, ass-shaking breaks. The Space Cowboys were a huge influence on me, and I credit my addiction to heroes like 8-Ball, Zach Moore, shOOey and Kap'n Kirk (many of whom I now count as friends). But before there were RSS feeds of tunes or podcasts or a Rockstar Librarian Guide, they were like gods to me. I'd show up to a barren wasteland chasing the bass and when I found it, it was like discovering hidden treasure. Pure bliss. They threw down some of the most amazing sets I'd ever heard, and touched my soul (and my booty) in ways that would forever change me. I credit the Cowboys, Brass Tax, Dusty Rhino, FnF and Opulent Temple (and countless other unknown-to-me playa DJs that drew me in off the Esplanade with your sick beats) for inspiring me to finally pick up the decks and do everything in my power to keep this magical sound alive in both the desert and the real world -- a sound that seems to have become harder and harder to find.

This mix, then, is a tribute. To the producers over the past 12 or so years that this mix covers that created this sound, to the DJs who captured my attention and took me on incredible sonic journeys, to the sound camps that brought the infrastructure year after year, to my dear friend Raj for inviting me to take the helm of the trailer on Monday night, and to the culture that allowed me and countless others before me to share their passion with like-minded masses who live to shake their asses.

Thank you, all of you. This is the set I would have wanted to hear this year, so I brought it. I hope you enjoy.

This mix is an exercise in running with an out-there idea and letting inspiration guide the way. 

I'm currently in the midst of a four-month stay on the island of Hawaii and was lucky enough to attend a wonderful rave campout in the wilds of Puna. I've been super curious about the underground scene out here and where the musical stylings lie(spoiler alert - mostly bass music). I wanted to find the happy medium between my typical predilections and the local sound, and started amassing some tracks. 

One of these tracks is titled "808" (after the drum machine, obvs), which is also the Hawaii area code -- it's a point of pride for natives here. I saw a young kid the next day wearing a t-shirt with a license plate illustration that said "808 ST8." 808 State! Now there's a band I hadn't listened to since, well, I started out on the DJ trip back in '91. And since I picked the decks back up I've been looking for a good excuse to work some of my favorites from the early early 90s into a set. Sure enough, a lot of these new deeper, richer tracks played really well with tracks almost 30 years their senior. 

So there's the long and winding tale of this mix. Shout out to my aging ravers ("gravers," I'm told we're called) who know where I'm coming from. And yeah, I hit the awesome new @stantonwarriors album pretty hard in this mix, but I'm also stoked I managed to slide them in between Acen and @808-state-official. :D

Born and raised in California, now-Hawaii-based ezwhip remembers with vivid clarity the exact moment he first heard the opening notes of Erasure’s “Who Needs Love Like That?,” launching a now 35-year-plus love affair with electronic music. His pioneering early 90s radio show Chillspace explored the nascent genre of ambient house, but it was turn-of-the-century Burning Man that dumped rocket fuel onto a burgeoning obsession with the broken beat. He gravitates towards high-vibe music with a visceral feel - grimy and grindy, bassy and bouncy. His mixes reflect a passion for a variety of styles and genres, weaving fresh sounds with properly-cellared bangers to inspire both old heads and new generations of bass-chasing, booty-shaking beat freaks.
