The general mood quickly shifted from compulsive optimism to shock, to a potentially toxic mix of resignation and confusion. Of all the threats, this is the most immediate: the mind lags behind reality, and fears and substitute actions crowd into the space.

For my part, I'm looking for a term that doesn't exclude three emotions: horror at the gigantic failure of an entire civilization, anger at the devastating consequences and the stubbornness of not coming to terms with it.
