Breathe. Saturate. Dive. In our search for inspiration we delve into the depths of Soundcloud on a daily basis. Slowly scrolling until something catches my ear. This decent sometimes takes several days that amount to several hundred, nay, thousand tracks deep. When I resurface I come back with a few treasures that plant the seeds for new projects or that deeply have changed the way I listen. I want to share these tracks with you but a simple 'repost' within Soundcloud does not pay the homage that I feel these tracks deserve.

So I am starting 'Deep Dive', where I showcase all the tracks that I have 'discovered' that have inspired me with their beauty and ingenuity. For the tracks that have not been forgotten by their creator, I feature more in-depth descriptions of the track and artist and what their track has meant to me as an ultimate show of gratitude.

Hidden-by-the-Wall is a new soundwork by :zoviet*france: commissioned by Green Croft Arts as part of its Collision and Conflict project.

Collision and Conflict is a GPS-triggered geolocated sound walk, presented through the Echoes phone app, that follows a circular route between Walltown and Green Croft in Northumberland, UK. The route runs alongside and close by Hadrian's Wall, a vast Roman defensive fortification that runs east/west across northern England, marking the northwestern frontier of the Roman empire. While following the route, walkers can listen to each of the 14 new music, sound and spoken word Collision and Conflict compositions at the locations to which they've been allocated along the way. Hidden-by-the-Wall can be found along a stretch of open country between Walltown and Thirlwall, a high point from which the distant Scottish borders to the north and the North Pennines to the south straddle the horizons.

In devising Hidden-by-the-Wall we set out to capture hidden and unnoticed sounds in the vicinity and recreate lost sounds that would have been heard decades ago but have now gone forever. The original field recordings that form the hidden and unnoticed sounds are here in this playlist. More about each track can be found in the description on its page. Those tracks form an  open remix project with 11 original, downloadable 24 bit / 48kbps field recordings we captured to create this track. We invite anyone to take these and use them to create something new. If you do, please post it here on SoundCloud and let us know – we very much want to hear what you do with them.

Inside Ice Wind Fence, Oak Leaves Dropped Into Horsetail Ponds At Walltown Sur Rêve

This track is a reassembly of original field recordings made by :zoviet*france:, and used in their 2021 composition “Hidden by the Wall”. All of the source material, with the exception of a bit of dialog to recontextualize the piece, was recorded by :zoviet*france:, and then treated, decomposed, and remixed in our studio in March 2021.

This is my contribution for the open remix project curated by :zoviet*france:, this track has been assembled using audio sources taken from “Hidden by the Wall”, a soundwork by :zoviet*france: commissioned by Green Croft Arts as part of its Collision and Conflict project.

Field recordings have been deconstructed and remixed at #1st Floor Studio, (Varmo, UD), Italy on Sunday, April 11th, 2021.

Parallel Landscapes is the first solo full-length album from Swiss artist Steinbrüchel on 12k, despite his relationship with the label and apperances on compilations, collaborations (Status, with Frank Bretschneider (12k1033)) and EP releases (Mit Ohne, (12k2010)). It seems that Steinbrüchel was waiting for the right moment to release such an illustrious album that is not only a release of music but of visual art as well.

Parallel Landscapes consists of a compact disc in a cd wallet and a beautifully printed sixty page colour printed booklet with a laser stenciled wrap-around cover conceptualized and designed by Steinbrüchel featuring photographs from Taylor Deupree and an essay by Lawrence English. The booklet and cd wallet are housed in a slipcase printed inside and out in black and white on contrasting paperstocks.

The music on Parallel Landscapes was created with the design process in mind. Steinbrüchel engaged himself with ideas of «designing» music instead of making or writing music and about the importance of music existing with (or without) visual enhancement.

The ideas of landscape, while not new in the musical world, were prevalent throughout the creative process. Music vs. landscape, music as horizontal layers, drawing new curves (landscapes) over sound files, imposing one landscape onto another and hearing/seeing the results. However, the album isn¹t just about horizontal combinations but vertical inbetweens as well. What happens from one event to the next? What happens when events are combined? How does the addition of one object (audio, visual) redefine another object next to it? What happens to a table when a chair is placed in front of it? ... And how does all of this coalesce into sonic and visual space?

There¹s an incredible amount of exploratory thought behind Parallel Landscapes that make this one of Steinbrüchel¹s most ambitious projects to date. His music has become increasingly refined but always retaining his signature sound. Still using the ideas of sine waves and pure tones but now softened with time, his palette stretches across electronics into a variety of found and acoustic sources. Bell tones are in the forefront, interspersed with the soft crackles of noise and static. Tones are stretched across the visual plane like a bell being carried across the land forever duplicating itself. Parallel Landscapes is engaging and reflective and sets a new standard in Steinbrüchel¹s creative output.
