Entitled ‘From A to Sea - Unreleased Works 2008 / 2012’, Applescal presents a 9-track mini album with various old works and journeys, as you would expect, through all manner of electronic influences. From minimal leanings seen on his releases for German label Traum, through to the pastoral electronica seen on his Atomnation releases, abstract ‘non-glitch’ IDM, bouncy brain-dance and more. Peppering his tunes with shades of Aphex Twin, Radiohead and even naïve 80s style electronics, the Dutch producer manages to wring emotion from the barest of elements, with his tracks travelling through the gamut of emotions from sadness through to uplifting happiness.

The tracks, culled from an old, forgotten computer, are as at home on the dance floor as they are on headphones or audiophile speakers. 'From A to Sea' comes out the 9th of December on Atomnation.

Hailing from Buffalo, NY, and soon to be based in Miami, Geo Kowalow is a DJ and Producer specializing in all sounds of the underground, performing under the monikers Ellen Degenerate, and Interpretive Sound From Hip-Hop to Techno, they’re ready for any situation with tasteful selections, and technically proficient mixes that ease listeners through a genre-fluid experience. Ellen represents more traditional house and funk sounds, and leans towards a more eclectic approach to selecting records.

Their time as a working DJ has sharpened their skills via regular monthly and weekly gatherings at multiple spaces and venues around Buffalo,New York, including a residency at The Underground Niteclub, a queer oriented club with weekly drag events and dance parties. Their main focus has been running the collective Satellite of Love, organizing events, raves, and community projects big to small. Geo’s new endeavor in the works is Interpretive Sound, a soon to be music label, floating party series, and DJ collective based everywhere and nowhere. Also look out for Degeneration MIA, a DIY rave series being reinvigorated for 2023 around the 305/786.

Q#1: What artists inspire you? 

A#1: I would say, right now, my top people are Danny Daze, Ben UFO, and Nikki Nair when it comes to underground titan DJs and/or producers. Also shoutouts to the homies Taimur (T-Bag Records/Blkmarket Music), Ryan Clover (Homage Records), and DJ Ray (Open Space Records) for also keeping me inspired with their music and respective labels. 

Q#2: What are your top three favorite events / clubs that you’ve been to?

A#2: 
1. Miami’s scene as a whole (RIP ATV Records). 
2. Unter events at floating DIY spaces in NYC. 
3. Hot Mass in Pittsburgh.

Q#3: What’s a normal concert that you’ve been to that wasn't dance music?  

A#3: I really love the electronic jam band named Lotus. They have this camping festival about four hours from Buffalo called Summerdance. I like jam bands and funky rock music - and there’s totally this untapped source between jam music, and funky jackin’ house - those cats love it and they don’t even know they do until they’re on the dance floor losing their minds. My friend and collective partner Sam/U-Lock has been to see them 50 or more times I don’t even know anymore. She’s a maniac for them.

:: APPLESCAL INTERVIEW ::
F2t4 :: tell us a bit about how you first got into dance music and how you got to the sound you play now?

APPLESCAL :: It’s a long time already, about 12 years. I discovered Reason 2.0 via a friend and was hooked from the moment I opened the program. I used to be a fan of Tiesto back in the days, he didn't play the commercial sound back then, but was more a pioneer back then. I slowly discovered more artists and underground music over the years.

F2t4 ::  Who would you say are your big influences as a DJ and as a producer?

APPLESCAL :: The biggest influence were the early days of Border Community, the label ran by James Holden. Gold Panda's album 'Lucky Shiner', Bonobo and Baths album 'Mirage' were more recent influences.

F2t4 :: Border Community certainly was a huge influence for us too, ‘The Sky Was Pink’ is certainly a legacy track. For those of us that don’t know, how would you describe your DJ’ing style?

APPLESCAL :: I play Techno, House and Electronica. It's hard to describe a taste properly though.

F2t4 :: Any funny stories from your travels?

APPLESCAL :: The most recent one is from Russia. With the biggest Jetleg of all times we were attacked by dogs. It was crazy, but the driver was like 'Hey, dude, what the fuck, this happens every day here'. Further there's been a lot of drunk fun of course! 

F2t4 ::  What do you find more enjoyable, working on a track, or playing a gig to a packed crowd?

APPLESCAL :: First I loved working on music more. But over the years i started to enjoy the playing more and more, maybe right now I even prefer the DJ'ing more as the production. 

F2t4 ::  What is your ‘if all else fails’ tune?

APPLESCAL :: It's my track "Spring and Life". This one never let me down and I play it at almost each gig. 

F2t4 ::  A geek & tech question... what is your studio set up at the moment? Is there any bit of equipment from the past or present that you wish you owned?

APPLESCAL :: I would love to buy a Polyvox. This is an old big Russian machine. My setup is very basic, I never had the cash to invest in a proper studio. I just work on my Macbook with Adam A7 Speakers, MOTU Ultra Lite soundcard and some midi instruments. 

F2t4 ::  Funny enough we use the same MIDI Controller, how’s the UC33e treating ya?

APPLESCAL :: It's an amazing controller and very old. They are not for sale anymore. I haven't find a better controller since i bought. I'm looking for a proper replacement for a long time already but haven't found anything yet.

F2t4 ::  What do you do to relax?

APPLESCAL :: I enjoy walking, anywhere really, through the city, beach or the woods. It's meditative.

F2t4 ::  Who was more influential in your musical taste, father or mother, why?

APPLESCAL :: Neither of them. We listened to the radio a lot in the car, but in the house we never played music. I often regret that I never played an instrument in my youth times. If i could do one thing over in my life, it would choose to take music lessons on my 7th; learn to play an instrument.

F2t4 ::   Of all artforms, why music? Why not create in a different medium?

APPLESCAL :: I draw too. And I design a bit. But just never took the time to specialize in it. I just love to puzzle and like to work on details. That's why music is my speciality. 

F2t4 ::  What is the goal of your label, Atomnation. Do you plan for it to put out tracks only intended as dance music, with a 4/4 kick, or have you thought about expanding into the more avant-garde?

APPLESCAL :: The goal of Atomnation really is just to push good electronica and dance music. There are so many talented artists and tracks produced who deserve a lot more attention - but only end up with 400 or less plays on Soundcloud and 3 sales on Bandcamp as they don't have the knowledge how to reach people. I think good music deserves to be promoted and listened to. That part i really enjoy. Offer new talent a proper release and give the audience cool and unexpected music.

Sometimes, a mix can tell a very deep story… FLOOR⁴ has found for you a little spring tale coming straight from the nature of Switzerland. 

Unfold from Lausanne has a very unique approach of the studio mixes: he first writes down a tale and then translates it into music. The guideline is therefore a story instead of the sound, creating an interesting atmosphere with surprising sequences.

For this 2h20 long mix experience a tale divided in 5 chapters, which can be summarized like this:

1. From start to 0:06:15: Birth of Mother Nature on Planet Earth.
2. From 0:06:15 to 1:02:54: Birth of Mankind: follow Mother Nature evolving from a painting to another around the population.
3. From 1:02:54 to 2:00:02: Mankind trying to control Mother Nature…
4. From 2:00:02 to 2:15:33: … which slowly brings Mankind to its death…
5. From 2:14:55 until the end: Epilogue (metamorphosis).

We hope you feel the story behind the music, otherwise simply enjoy a great set of the finest hypnotic techno with "Swiss precision" transitions (incl. tracks by Luigi Tozzi, Ness, Dino Sabatini, Claudio PRC, Donato Dozzy, Cio D'Or, Droneghost, Svarog).

The set is dedicated to the FLOOR⁴'s listeners and to Unfold's young son, who speaks in the epilogue.
