After setting the tone with two originals and one remix with us back in 2020, Berlin-based producer @fabiankrooss returns this year with his debut solo sortie, 'Planet D'. A nod to the ecological nonsense that envisages salute in departing our beloved 'Planet A' for other celestial bodies to tear down - such as a fictional 'Planet D', the EP runs the gamut from minimalistic club grooves to blissed-out tropical chuggers, via further atmospheric excursions.

PREMIERE: Fabian Krooss - Time To Act (Original Mix) [Stil Vor Talent]

It has been a whirlwind couple of years for Berlin’s Fabian Krooss (@fabiankrooss). What started with his 2018 release via Nicone’s Dantze imprint has since seen the likes of Einmusika Recordings, Rebellion der Träumer, Serafin Audio Imprint, and Trndmsk hosting his playfully positive sounds. In fact, just last month he released an outstanding 6 track EP via Stil vor Talent and solidified his position in our music world. A longtime friend of The Gardens of Babylon (TGOB), you may remember him from his much-lauded 2018 The Monastery performance. Since, he has been a TGOB podcast staple, releasing no less than 3. Of course, Fabian Krooss doesn’t only represent TGOB! Clubs like Sisyphos and festivals including Wilde Möhre and Feel Festival have all felt his minimalistic yet complex DJ sets.

2020 was set to be something of a breakout year for Fabian. With his stacked release schedule and rising name recognition, the future was all but certain until it wasn’t. We all know the realities of 2020, turning many once staple activities into nothing more than pipe dreams affecting all, near and far. For Fabian, however, this was no deterrent. In buckling down in the studio, experimenting with different tools and techniques, something new emerged: a synergy of both personal and production growth. The result channels all of this, turning those pipe dreams of despair into ones of eager anticipation. And with that, Fabian Krooss returns to the Gardens of Babylon with his first label release.

Pipe Dreams is an interpretation of our times. In the absence of what we hold dear – dancing, friends, endless nights – life as we are used to seems like just that. Along these lines, the EP’s A-side Pie in the Sky is an unpredictable, deep dive into fantasy. Introducing new elements just when you thought you knew what to expect. Throughout, beauty meets crazy, shifting it from a place of peace to one of unparalleled euphoria. Next, Kaleidoscope is one of those tracks perfect for both at home listening and dancefloor grooving. Like its namesake, Kaleidoscope sparkles with a multitude of color and emotion. Remix duties come from a pair of talented German dancefloor masters. First off, Iorie (@iorie) takes on Pie in the Sky with his Late Night Thoughts interpretation. It is one for the wee hours and beyond. The Cioz (@cioz) remix of Kaleidoscope rounds the EP out, maintaining the dreamy feel of the original but cutting and slicing elements into something entirely its own.

With Pipe Dreams, Fabian Krooss provides The Gardens of Babylon’s fifth 2021 release. Joining Zigan Aldi, Spaniol, Mâhfoud, Amine K & Kadosh, Pipe Dreams is organic, energetic, melodic and a little crazy... a perfect fit with The Gardens of Babylon family.

Featuring all of that elementary Krooss-copyrighted sound palette, this new effort finds the Berlin producer exploring further ahead the concepts of minimal trompe-l'oeil and electro-acoustic roguishness that flowed across his previous iterations, resulting in an ever streamlined, pared-to-the-essential quartet of club-ready cuts. Surgically executed and bound to get all booties shaking in a two-mile radius.

Drenched in reverbs and machinic processes, "Unchained" draws first blood with its engineering of bubbling bass onslaughts and steel-clad percussions going hard against nostalgic swashes of brittle chimes and flat chords. One foot in a celestial paradise of sorts, the other wading in a sea of molten metal. A subdued dub affair laced with big-room focused electroid tendencies at first, "Higher State" progressively trades that chaotic opening for a steadier momentum, getting each bar tidy for the accordion-like home run to exhale its flavours with optimal results.

Hips wiggling and feet shuffling, the bouncy, tropical-hot "Frechdachs" is no straight walker but rather well a cheerful churner primed for metronome-busting action down the mosh pit. Sway, roll, shake off the dust from your shoes and repeat. Final number "In Between" caps it off in sheer mesmeric Andalusian-style. Serving up an oddball mix of FX-riddled, raucous electronics and refined Spanish guitar riffs, it's a feast for the senses that unfolds, deep and lush as it gets. On Marc Holstege's 'The Boy In The Garden', melancholic strings rise and fall endlessly over a slow breakbeat and shimmering synths. But it's the soulful, contemplative male vocal sitting at the song's core that reaches straight for the heart – and won't let go again. 'Wolves (Sunday Morning Version)' is equally touching, as the Dutch producer guides another delicate vocal through a dazzling slow-beat arrangement with profound results. For their remix, the Italian duo Moonwalk then strip 'The Boy In The Garden' of its sentimental atmospheres, cunningly remoulding the vocals to fit their razor-sharp and cinematic peak-time sound.

Jaquomo's 'Replace Space' is sure to run on repeat. Here, Caro Mac's vocal incites our memories for those lost loves as it floats over pensive chords and a crunchy trip-hop beat. 'Close & Hide' is pitched-down piano house accentuated by another ingenious use of vox, making it just as moreish. Rounding things off with a bang, Fabian Krooss reimagines 'Replace Space' as a playful italo-disco opus of arpeggiated basslines and wonky synths.

‘Music is my anchor, my passion, my favorite form of expression’, Fabian says, adding: ‘I want to surprise’. It’s this belief in freedom that drives his work as an artist, unafraid to experiment and craft a profoundly personal sound in the process. A juxtaposition often sits at the heart of his tracks, as Fabian sprinkles lush or mischievous melodies over springy, sometimes elastic and other times static rhythms, nodding to organic and minimal house at once. It’s Fabian’s deep-rooted feeling for sound that fuse these disparate motifs into an irresistible whole as his productions unfold and flourish with intricate details and surprising touches, always united under a tight groove.

All of these addictive attributes are equally omnipresent when Fabian helms the booth – with a nonchalance rooted in pure joy that’s perceivable in an instant. Here, again, he intrinsically becomes the storyteller, weaving an authentic narrative while turning the room upside down. Whether that’s with a sunny selection at Sisyphos Strand, peak-time power at Bucht der Träumer, Wilde Möhre or Feel Festival or a dubbed-out affair for Afterhour Sounds. While by no means a recent presence in Berlin with past gigs at favourites like Kater Blau, Sisyphos, or Ritter Butzke, the last years took Fabian further afield to festivals like The Monastery, Feel, scene highlight ADE or shows around the world in Tulum, Zanzibar, New York, Istanbul, Amsterdam and many more. 

With itchy feet for the floor and a bright future ahead, Fabian’s firmly set sail to return to the booth – enabling big emotions and wide smiles in the meantime by way of his ever-evolving, always-sparkling music.
